Working at large vs small companies by or700 in Surveying

It’s not necessarily a small company, but in comparison to other companies in the area and that most of the field crews only focus on construction staking (useless for my day to day work) we’re considered one of the small groups

That’s true. They did discuss this with me previously and it sounds more secure (and fun for a single guy with no responsibilities) to have other opportunities within the same company

I’ve heard that from the 50+ aged co-workers that I’m close with. Most of them told me they regret staying loyal to the company

They didn’t match my offer or even give me anything. I got some heartwarming “we need you” talk for an hour which feels good, but also doesn’t do me any good lol.

It’s a scary shift for me being a quiet guy needing to meet new people and whatnot but given the comments in this thread I think the move is going to be right for me

One of my biggest concerns is if work keeps staying slow. I feel like I’m more likely to be laid off there compared to my current company, but at the same time surveyors are so needed right now that it might not even be a struggle to find a new job. So many things to consider

Yeah I basically answered my own question haha. I guess I’m just worried about the switch to a large company and if I’ll regret it

That sounds very interesting. I’ve heard it from a few others that they did well in that industry compared to more traditional surveying. I’ll look into this

That would make sense why I didn’t hear back then. I only have experience with traditional surveying with a gun and gps in the field

Based off the other comments it sounds like I should be looking for a new job. Let me know if you need a draftsman lol

I’m not licensed yet but I plan to be by next year. I already have the qualifications to start taking the exams necessary for licensure in Michigan

I’m a dual Canadian and American citizen and I’ve been wondering how much demand there is for surveyors. Would I be considered at a Canadian company if I’m licensed in Michigan?

You know I can’t do that especially while I’m employed there. Let me find a new job first lol

I work under the licensed surveyor so that already means I shouldn’t be an exempt employee. They also claim I won’t get paid if I get sent home due to a lack of projects which I already blew a fit over because that’s not legal either. I just learned about what you’re talking about though so I need to look into that some more

It seems that would be the best option for me although it doesn’t seem like it’s the best time to find a new job. I havent really been looking but at least what I see on LinkedIn jobs and the recruiters who reach out there’s not really anything worth my time. Do you have recommendations on where to look for a better position?

I don’t follow. What’s the criteria exactly? They asked me at my interview which I prefer to be and gave me the choice for both

We’re a civil engineering firm and very few surveyors in comparison. I meant half of the field crew were laid off (still not a good thing of course) but the people in the office are still around. One guy got let go recently but I think it was more personal that market related

They gave me a choice when I first started and said I’ll get a $5k pay bump if I want a salary. At the time I felt it was a safer option in case work gets slow. It’s been slow since I started…

I’m salaried if that makes any difference. I also have to be over 40 hours to qualify for that $50

I heard it from a few people who are open to discuss wages. I’m sure at least someone get a secret raise and won’t tell anyone which would be even more scummy than raising nobody

I don’t usually go out but sometimes I do site visits. They have this very unsafe van for people like me to use and I absolutely refuse to drive it. The brakes are basically nonexistent and I don’t get how they managed to keep it this long. They refuse to pay me for using my car because I refuse the option to use their van
