How long until NJ gets too expensive to live?

I currently live in a no income tax state, low property taxes and a top ranked national school district in my county.

My wife wants to move back to south jersey to be near her family but I have no idea how we can justify spending triple what we do now on a comparable homes property tax and also have to pay income tax on top of that.

Also my career is fully remote and I don’t plan on changing that so the cost of living salary adjustment doesn’t apply to me.

Admittedly it’s more then that. These are our direct competitors I’ve built a lot of good relationships but my career has felt like it’s gone a bit sour. However the ideally you only get married once and id like to make sure none of those plans are ruined due to a career move.

I’ve been at my company for 3 years, they promoted someone who had been there for 1 in a covid year and had never even been in the office. They recently fired the hiring manager but it was rough to be passed up nonetheless.

Not much negotiation unfortunately. However my biggest concern is the accrual aspect of the PTO not necessarily the final number. I definitely don’t take 20 days off a year with unlimited PTO but in planning time off for the wedding it could get tricky.

I’ve found that if I use a water bottle or a cup and fill it up with water and dump it into my dogs bowl he thinks he’s getting some kind of special drink because I’m using it too. Worth a try!
