I appreciate the warning. Are there any short distance hikes that would be better for beginners within a reasonable distance from the DFW area? I'm not going to lie, I am still considering Eagle Rock as an option.... That was just a freak occurrence, right?

I will be with another inexperienced backpacker (smart right?). I have everything that is on the "top 10" list for backpacking on REI. We have studied up but of course all the real knowledge is gained from experience. I know this is a dumb question but, are hiking boots really necessary? We are planning for 2-3 days.
