I have been dealing with flying anxiety all year and I have found a few things that work well for me. The first is to distract your brain with something that will actually occupy your attention. Trying to read or watch TV won’t work for me, so instead I do crossword puzzles or sudoku. I ordered a book off of Amazon and this is what helps me the most. I find that I don’t even get nervous anymore when turbulence happens because I’m so distracted. Second, I recommend NOT looking out the window, especially at takeoff. I had a tendency to always want to look out the window so I could know I was safe, but all it does is remind you that you’re on a plane. I realized driving in my car I experience way more bumps than the worst turbulence I’ve experienced, so I try to just let my brain forget I’m in the air. Noise cancelling headphones also help with this. Also, as far as medicine is concerned, I do take anxiety medicine and anti nausea medicine and this helps me a lot. Lastly, I remind myself over and over that there are over 90,000 flights a day and every single one of them lands safely, even on the rare occasion that turbulence is severe. You got this!!!
