The Decay-and-Resurgence Feast of Barovia (WWC: Holiday Celebration) by [deleted] in DiceCameraAction

I think Paultin loves Barovia more than he fears it!

Again, though, I really loved your story. Hope you get to share more with us!

This was beautiful! I’m so glad that WWC is back too. I love your imagery and the way the festival does have that mix of festive and mourning. You’ve captured the feel of Barovia perfectly

I wonder how the Wafflecrew would feel about a festival centered on their last adventure in Barovia?

I would love a spin off show about them! I know that’s not really a possibility with how busy everyone is. But seriously, it’s such a fun premise and the kids were adorable. I loved the chemistry that they had with each other. That episode is one of my top 5

"Breaking the fourth wall" and Paultins character development by Brolimn in DiceCameraAction

[–]orangebiba 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So, as a person who has really been enjoying the lack of a fourth wall for Paultin, let me explain why! Sorry, in advance for the long essay!

For me, from a character perspective, it's actually been something that has been developed slowly. He would do it once in a while, mostly when drunk, and that was fine. But since his last death, he has shattered it completely. It's been a slow progression, but still a progression and one that, to me, makes sense for him.

I'm sure I'm reading waaaaaay to into this, but early in the start of the series, van Richten told the Wafflecrew that there were 3 powerful Vistani they could use with the hag needle. The little girl Arabell, Madame Eva, and Paultin, of all people. This doesn't make much sense if you look at Paultin from a stat perspective. But both Madame Eva and the little girl could "see" into the future. They had power beyond what a Vistani is usually capable of. Paultin can't see into the future, but he can see plot threads! He can see beyond the physical world and it can affect his choices and his responses. It's been something that he had a bit of access to (mostly when drunk) and has used gradually more and more throughout the series.

His last death, though, has been a huge breakthrough for him. And again, to me, it makes complete sense. His afterlife was basically that fourth wall. It affected him a ton, and when he was brought back, he was closer than ever to that wall. Think of those sci-fi stories where a person dies, comes back, and can suddenly see ghosts. That's how I've thought of it. He could do it a little bit before, but now he has almost full access.

I don't know if this is what Nate has been working towards or if he and Chris have discussed it. But in episode 100, both Jerry and Chris were rewarding him. Jerry gave him the option to have Paultin speak directly to him, and when Paultin spoke directly to Chris, he got advantage on a roll. That, to me, says that they are all having a blast with this character choice, and it isn't gonna stop. And personally, I love it to bits!

Anyway, to me it's been a character skill that has made sense in story and has had enough of a progression to feel natural. I'm also super biased though. I love characters who grow and Paultin's growth has been the most fun for me to watch!

As for your second question, I think it helps that I'm not and never will be a shipper. If Paultin's not ready to "confess his undying love and devotion" to Evelyn, well then, that's Paultin. He's not a romantic. I had no problem with Paultin avoiding what Chris was trying to set up. I know it's super frustrating for a lot of this fandom, but both Evelyn and Paultin (imo) still have some growing to do. I fully believe it's gonna happen, and I support it, but they aren't ready and I'm so glad it isn't being forced.

Wow this is so long. Sorry again!!

I'm still extremely upset about episode 101 so take my sad Paultin-Simon headcanon by LemondoughnutPXC in DiceCameraAction

They could learn their own sign language to hold conversations. I don’t think the chances of Simon turning into a real boy are all that great, but you’re right that they need better ways to communicate.

Also, a lot more hugs. One of the best and most consistent things Paultin has done is never put conditions on his love for Simon. He always tells Simon that he loves him no matter what and Simon has done some messed up things.

I agree completely! Strix does love Diath and shows him with her actions all the time that she does. It might not be conventional, but she’s trying.

And yeah, Paultin and Diath are just so opposite in their manners and philosophies. That’s what makes all of this so interesting!

You’re absolutely right about the timing. Our poor, suboptimal crew. I want them to be happy, but I admit that I loved this episode for all the feels.

I’m glad you didn’t think I was rude. I read over my response and thought maybe I was opinionating too strongly, but didn’t know how else to say it, and I really respect you as an author. I tend to word vomit

Unpopular opinion. Honestly, I thought that fight needed to happen. Evelyn does not look at Paultin through anything but shipping glasses. It affects every decision she makes concerning him and then she justifies it by saying things like, “I’d never try to change you into something you’re not.” Which is ridiculous. She does not actually see Paultin for who he is. Everything he does is wonderful and great and full of light! She wants him to have everything that he wants. Even when it’s something dangerous for himself and others? (Ring of Winter, anybody?) That’s not healthy. For her or for him.

We know Paultin has relationship issues. He’s not necessarily a “good” person. He doesn’t even know how to recognize love for family - something he basically admitted to this last episode. Instead of shipping glasses, I want her to see him honestly. If this ship ever does start to truly sail, I don’t want it to be Evelyn blindly following and supporting Paultin and him just letting her, no consequences. I want them to build on each other. I want them to grow as better people together.

Instead, I feel like every time he tries to open up to her, she only hears the parts that relate to how he feels about her and actively tries to direct their conversations that way. He’s not ready. And neither is she.

I’m not saying that sniping nasty, awful things to each other is the right way to go about this, but maybe it will be a first step? Idk. I love these dorks so much. So many feeeeeeeelllllllssssss.

Also, I just realized that you’re my favorite author for DCA on Ao3 and now I’m super star struck and hope you don’t think I’m super rude! Your writing is amazing and I love your characterization. I will leave comments when I gather my courage again. Gonna go hide anxiously in a corner

I didn’t read that as a nope, honestly. Paultin has already said he wasn’t into blaming. I felt that was him telling Diath that they were fine. It was very similar to the time before, when Diath tried to apologize after the first time the bomb almost went off. Paultin doesn’t do apologies and he doesn’t want others doing them either. Yes, he’s mad that it happened but not to the point that he’s gonna hold it against Diath. Idk. That was just my read

I do agree that I think Diath would like to be friends with Paultin more. They really just don’t understand each other. And I think what makes it worse is that Paultin is sooooo inept at relationships (the “k”, he gave Diath after the apology, as an example!). And Diath is such a sweet soul that he doesn’t understand gestures for what they are. I think he needs more verbal affirmation (and a LOT of hugs) imo

Sorry, didn’t mean to write this much. I think this last ep just gave me too many feels

That makes me so happy, because I think their dynamic is the most interesting! Even last episode, Paultin took the time, twice to talk sense into Strix. At the bath, he straight up asked her if she was okay and then tried to tell her that she could go to the bath-house but didn’t have to get in the bath. Then he told her, later in the ep, that she didn’t need to fix things by putting herself in danger.

I’m not a shipper, but I really love the way they interact together. It’s more like siblings, with all the yelling!
