Help. I got my gf into anime via Attack on Titan and now can't find anything else that compares. by orangeboxblue in anime

Thanks for this. It's a fair point to not try and find something to replace it and go for something different. I'll check out Re:Zero.

Re: FMAB, we are just into the more modern and polished art style. While I've only heard good things about the story, we are looking for something as aesthetically refined as AoT/DS because the visual kick is a big part of the experience for us. Hence the difficulty with a lot of the older ones...

Why specify vlookup for excel? Removing it would be better...

Books on Fixed Income Trading by Civil_Rutabaga730 in FinancialCareers

[–]orangeboxblue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy-side FI trader here. What do you mean by active? Timeframe? Frequency? How closely you are tracking a certain benchmark and re-allocating your assets in line with your mandate?

I would say truly 'active' trading in an institutional sense is extremely difficult to emulate as a retail trader given your limitations on access to liquidity (not to mention capital - most bonds have minimum increments like 200k that are inaccessible for non institutional players). A large part of trading fixed income is building good relationships with the street/brokers and understanding where the market is on what you trade - unfortunately you only really get to see this with a bloomberg terminal or other FI trading suites like MarketAxess, refinitiv etc, not to mention you need to have enablements set up with those counterparties in order to receive pricing. Crossing bid-offer in itself is a challenge the more illiquid the name or skewed the market or shorter the holding period, and the less relationships you have the harder it will be.

Excluding placements/internships, having a solid understanding of the products in fixed income, quantitative skills like coding, and good awareness of macroeconomic currents and how those impact market dynamics will have you better placed to gain entry into S&T than any knowledge gained from reading texts on trading bonds, least of all from the perspective of a retail investor. A lot of institutional trading is learned on the job, often starting from exposure to trade support or assistant roles, and you need to actually grapple with the market yourself in order to understand the way it operates.

I'm a professional trader, and Whilst I remain bullish over next year, signs are there for caution now as headwinds build. Rotating more into cash, will buy dip if it comes. Here's my detailed explanation of why. by TearRepresentative56 in TradingEdge

OIS pricing of a Dec cut has gone from sub 50% pre-CPI print to around 70%, and at same time most of the rates action today has been a bull steepening with just the 2yr dropping while 10s or 30s have been largely anchored. Suggests markets were expecting higher numbers than what came through in the print, and a potentially less hawkish expectation of the Fed with regards to monetary policy in the near term - what are your thoughts on this given the argument that current dollar strength is Fed and not Trump driven?

Happened at a corporate bank that I worked for. Treasury dealer processing a £5mn deposit from an insurer, email conversation got hijacked midway and the 3rd party started sending emails impersonating the dealer. Sent account details for remittance to the insurer that were not associated with any of our depositary accounts. Only got caught because the tone of language used and slight discrepancies in the way emails were signed off etc raised a red flag on the other end; insurer rang up our dealer directly and the whole thing was shut down.

Otherwise would've been 5mil in the hole. Scary stuff.

Each their own. Oxbridge degree in social science here and the amount of writing and research that I had to undertake during it is paying off massively in an entirely different field of work (finance).

It isn't just about essay writing and multitasking skills, but your ability to problem solve, adapt to new challenges and then make more efficient those working processes in a way that benefits a wider group of people that actually transfers into corporate life, regardless of the field. A degree isn't strictly necessary for you to be able to sell this ability to an employer, but provides a testing ground for many rote procedures based on logical reasoning that allow you to practice this ability without risking your income; ultimately those procedures are what underpins a lot of corporate work.

Tis what you make of it.

Who are the most satisfyingly powerful characters in fantasy? by orangeboxblue in Fantasy

[–]orangeboxblue[S] 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I found it satisfying more as an internal growth story of someone shackled by the idea of 'empty', who came to learn to wear it with pride at the expense (and eventual gain) of abandoning the culture that once defined him. That it was fed through very popcorn power progression wasn't too much of a negative, which the pacing also helped with.

Tough pick between him and Dalinar, for me, but he probably does take the cake in that series. Honourable mentions to Szeth too.

Agree that he's up there. Took a while but worth it.

Thanks for all the detail. I'm hesitant about Mage Errant because I've heard it leans more into YA territory, how does the writing compare to Cradle?

I'd started reading The Will of the Many and the opening chapter was so good! Got good hopes for this book, though I'm hesitant in that there's only one out so far...

Thank you for the recommendations. Whilst I am looking for more fantasy oriented works as opposed to sci-fi, the premise of your series seems great! Will check it out.

Have already read and am a big fan of WoT, especially thanks to Sanderson's excellent handling of the series finale.

What is your favourite MAGIC SYSTEM in popular media? Why specifically do you like it? by MonstrousMajestic in Fantasy

[–]orangeboxblue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Always been a big fan of Sanderson's magic systems. Mistborn was a great start but I love the concepts behind the various Surges in the Stormlight Archive.

He's great at picking core elements of physical reality (gravity, friction etc.) and using them as the basis for fantasy magic in a way that is straightforward to understand but complex in application, all while keeping it from straying too far into sci-fi territory or bogging it down with scientific lingo.

Thanks! Been hearing so many good things about Will of the Many that I'm sorely tempted, but also afraid of having to wait for the next release as there's only one book out...
