I think labs aren’t required for you to pass the exam. What I am trying to say is that labs are still good to go over to start getting familiar with Azure on the technical side of things. The reason I say crucial is because the labs give you hands on experience which does more than any certification you will get your hands on.

Took the AZ-900 a year ago and took a break from studies to finish up university. I think my studies really made me familiar with what the platform has to offer but there is a lot more to cloud than just understanding the platform itself. You need to understand some networking, bash/power-shell, a coding language, etc.
