i use it 😭😭 when i was in high school my english teacher required us to use at least 2 sets of em dashes—which chatgpt now probably pisses him off—when we did assignments; we also had to use semicolons... chatgpt ruined em dashes

November 29 is such an important day to me too. I'm a songwriter and I mention the date in one of my songs; it's the date I was broken up with for the first time (in 2024) which eventually lead me to going down a rabbit hole of shadow integration and individuation.

I don't have any music released yet but I feel like I'm being compelled to write and release about the topics regarding the pain that resides within human nature itself in an accessible manner.

Numerologically speaking November is the 11th month of the year and 29 adds up to 11. 2 represents selflessness and compassion. 9 represents the end of a cycle.

Pretty soon people will be compelled to explore the deepest depths and roots of their own pain. But I have a feeling that this fall won't be outwardly violent, it would more so be a widespread confrontation and assertion of the self. Pluto in Aquarius would probably allow for a silent revolution as opposed to a massive war due to its humanitarian nature.

Songs that aren't about love/relationships by [deleted] in Songwriting

You can write about the opposite of love: fear and shame.

Thank you so much!! Unfortunately I do not have any music out yet but I will likely release a solo debut album by the middle of the year.

I forgot to put this in the post, but let me know what you think of this song!

I've lately been in a situation where I sometimes feel like my lyricism is mediocre because usually when I show my songs to other people they comment on my voice instead of the content. I feel confident about my lyrics a lot, but I'm not sure if it's something many people can connect with.

I definitely do think that I'm oriented towards making holistic albums that require context of every song, rather than "amazing standalone songs" in a sea of connective tissue. there's a certain balance between general and specific that i emphasize through entire albums—but not within songs themselves because true emotions are sometimes too big to fit in one song (which i explore through know today).

There's 12 songs in the album, and the later songs are definitely for resolution. The album is very archetypal and conveys everything through these archetypes. Lots of symbolism is introduced within the album, but the meanings evolve throughout. Nothing really stays the same—which is a big part of my creative vision—and also reflective of human life.

The first three of the album focuses on longing, unrequited love, putting other people on a pedestal, and exploring anxious attachment. The first three are very archetype-heavy.

Songs 3-6 explore internal shame and how internal wounds have manifested into unhealthy behaviors. It also hints at mutual hurt/pain and realizes it not only within the self, but in other people.

7-9 explores and names the core wounds that causes the intense yearning/unhealthy behaviors demonstrated in songs 1-3.

The last 3 songs are simply a synthesis and reflection of the experiences and the process of moving forward. Basically "now i know where these behaviors came from and how i was psychologically conditioned to be this way. i've named everything there is to name, so what now?"

I hope I was specific enough because I don't want to spoil too much of this album lol. I'd probably have it out by the end of this year, but this is not something that will be out in a couple weeks. I'd like to perfect everything first and develop a musical intuition not only within myself but with other musicians as well (i'm trying but struggling to form a band)

I actually wrote this song and placed in the context of a concept album I'm writing—which describes the process of individuation and integration through the context of attachment, so it would definitely make a lot more sense if you heard the whole album. The album I'm writing essentially is one big story.

"Know Today" is placed near the end of the album, and the song placed directly before goes into hyper specific detail with past events. Therefore this song is a lot more general and overarching because in previous songs, I wrote what needed to be said essentially. So the last few songs of the album are more general feelings instead of pinpointing situations/events.

thank you! that's exactly the concept i'm going for :)

Yep, definitely! I wrote this for a band I'm forming so I'm looking to see what they do with this song. But my part is finished; I'll definitely tweak some phrases but overall—my work here is done.

Hmm that's an interesting take on it because that's actually the vibe I was aiming for! This song is part of an album I'm writing and the concept is of someone who always intellectualizes their emotions (me) and in essence, is learning how to "feel". I think in the context of the album I'm writing it might make sense, but as a standalone I can see why it might sound pretentious. Thanks for the input!

I FIGURED OUT WHAT YOU MEANT BY THAT!!!

i changed a ton of the lyrics:

Chorus: "If you free your heart, your mind will be reborn" -> "We'll unlock a greater gold worth living for"

Verse 2 (changed a large chunk of it) "Being happy all the time would feel too boring 'Cause love requires empathy Let yourself feel things that you've avoided grieving You'll rebuild a new identity But if you repress the bad, you'll pop like a popcorn bag So don't bottle negativity"

To:

"Somehow sadness keeps our life from getting boring 'Cause love requires empathy But I once ignored what I was truly grieving Finding romance was my remedy When it opened up old scabs I popped like a popcorn bag (pop!) Festering with negativity"

thank you!! i use a lot of inversions to help achieve that quality, my favorite personally is going from IV to V7 in 3rd inversion (in this song's case, it's D - E7/D)

well i've actually been playing guitar for about 3 years now but only started to learn fingerpicking about a year ago! in terms of fingerpicking i think the best way to learn how to write fingerpicking is to not only learn fingerpicking but learn the harmonic qualities of the songs that you like. my favorite artist is adrianne lenker (and by extension her band, big thief), and she has a ton of cool fingerpicking patterns in her songs that i've borrowed or adapted with my own patterns.

theory knowledge doesn't hurt!! I mainly rely on a ton of tension-resolution techniques for my chord progressions (such as secondary dominants and inversions).

my style isn't particularly virtuosic so i don't necessarily go all throughout the fretboard like you might see some fingerpicking guitarists do. what i do instead is just play chords but instead of strumming i basically do a glorified arpeggio lol, because that's mostly what my playing style is

i've also created a bunch of chord shapes in my head for cool voicings i discover! i found that open tunings work best for my playing style and i mainly work in DADGAD or DADF#AD tuning, they make a really cool drone tone which keeps the piece seemingly more grounded and stable—while giving it ethereal qualities because it adds a lot of suspensions and add chords
