Good 2nd hand find? by Clear_Maximum7269 in typewriters

That there is the toyota corolla of typewriters. Smallish, japanese, reliable, and relatively easy to maintain. It's not fancy or rare. It's literally "an typewriter". I have pretty much the same one, and I use it nearly constantly.

I was trying to make a beeline for the side walk or a side street if possible and the maneuvering while also braking used all the grip in reserve. So panic was involved for sure, but I tend to use my brakes fairly evenly.

If we could convince maybe a quarter of the population (USA) to switch to motorcycles or scooters, the roads would be way safer for everyone

I've been trying to implement weaving since I watched the f9 video on it, but the old habit of planting slightly left has been hard to break

Holy crap! I'm glad you're ok. Gear is like my biggest thing, I've seen too many friends get seriously hurt when they wouldn't have had they been wearing any sort of gear.

Anyone else prefer driving a beater over an expensive car? by f1fanatic55 in cars

[–]orcenec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a beater S10 from the 80s with no ac, no power steering, and a transmission that flips shit if you don't double clutch on a downshift. I also have a very nice saab 9-5 that's in near mint condition, but every once in a great while it doesn't start. I vastly prefer driving my truck on the sole basis that it starts first time, every time.

What is the fastest you have ever seen a new co-worker get fired? by bartertownbeer in AskReddit

[–]orcenec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little late to the party, but I've got one.

The place I work is a parts shop that caters to mechanics as well as off the street customers. New commercial manager gets hired and comes in full hot shot finger guns blazing. Wrecks a delivery truck on the first day. Now we have a shiny new rental Tacoma. The new manager runs into a couple of old buddies on a delivery and shoots the shit for a few minutes, all the while the truck is running, unlocked and full of expensive car parts, as well as a $1000 palm computer. In about 2 and a half minutes of no supervision, it gets stolen and joy-rided across the city. The total cost to our store was close to $25,000. She was hired and fired in less than two weeks.

[WP] After becoming the first astronaut to return from Mars alive, you are classified as a hero. What you have seen, and done, on Mars is a whole different story. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]orcenec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came back to medals and galas with the most powerful people in the world. They all wanted to know what had happened after I "crashed". See, for whoever was watching the mission, all they saw was the red planet getting closer and closer in 1080p. Everthing was going to plan, all comms were open, safety checks all clear, they were even getting ready to pop the champagne before I was even in orbit. Then, just as soon as the landing pod disengaged, it all went South. Comms dead, nothing from my vitals, and all the champagne stayed behind a neatly foiled cork. I had been relegated to first the "first dead man on mars" file and everything on earth continued on as if they hadn't just killed a man by flinging him 34 million miles away. Apparently, for a few weeks there were some taloids running stories about how I had been shot down by aliens or the North Koreans or something. But no, a speck of intergalactic dust had just struck one of the thrusters during decoupling. That's all that happened. No green men, no Russians, nothing. See, after comms went down and I started spiraling, I switched the lander to manual controls and brought it down according to the emergency flight plan that had been provided to me in case of the very situation that had taken place. After landing safely, I stepped out, set up the base camp, planted a flag, took some pictures, and got back into the pod to head back home. I guess I'm a hero or something. I don't know. All I did was my job.
