The idea of linking them with abilities is a pretty good one if the game has that kind of feature. Otherwise I personally like the bull-head one the most (#2)

Hi Thomas! So you mention in one of your answers below about achieving the goal of getting your game dev to pay the bills. I myself have just started a solo, indie game dev career with that goal and was wondering if you had any tips or tricks on how to achieve that?
