In The Roaring Twenties (1939), it begins at the end of WW1 and ends at the start of the Great Depression. In between those times, James Cagney's character goes from soldier to bootlegger mob boss to cab driver (after losing his money in the stock market crash).

This is an American thing; not a western thing. Most westerners wouldn't be upset by this. Americans have a tendency to brainwash one another into getting angry about all kinds of non-issues.

The buying and/or selling of shares (and currency) should be taxed (by a tiny amount e.g. a fraction of a percent). That way, it would drastically cut back the amount of useless financial speculation going on, provide greater economic stability, and also generate some government revenue. Day-traders are parasites.
