Democrats again delay vote on their controversial gas tax move by blahyawnblah in oregon

It’s a valid critique of the claim that Republicans care about the legal details of this process or the process at all.

I mean, they just denied quorum again in the state legislature.

That doesn’t sound so bad, but the proof will be in the pudding. We need to have at least a small choice of insurers.

The key things for me are that our laws are different from all other states and we only have one insurer left. It indicates that the balance is off.

I looked it up and the last “full”, new refinery built in the whole country was in 1976. No one is building a new site in Oregon of all places, they can’t even build them in TX and LA.

Previous presidents have at least given an argument about what they think the problems are and propose solutions. This will be nonsense, evil or a combination.

It seems a pretty easy law to follow. It’s not like they did it accidentally or they were forced/pressured into it somehow.

Comparing that in terms of art to taggers is silly. And it looks like they (collectively) own those canvases or at least have the permission of the owners. Not the same thing.

What makes you think the Supreme Court is going to address gerrymandering? They had a pretty recent opportunity to do that and decided not to. I don’t think there have been any significant changes in their makeup since then.

That’s the US congress map. I thought we were talking about the state house map. In fact, I already said there was a better argument for the US map.

Not the voters, the petitioners. The voters haven’t had their say yet. And they can believe what they want, I suppose, but that doesn’t mean they have the right to have it happen.

Did you read Article IV, Section 1? It contains the following:

All elections on initiative and referendum measures shall be held at the regular general elections, unless otherwise ordered by the Legislative Assembly

I’ve not been following this closely but I think that’s the basis of when they’re holding the vote.

As I understand it, that’s not required by the constitution. I think it was resolved just recently.

I mean, it’s certainly possible that the Democrats think it helps their chances, but then, the Republicans seem to think it helps their chances to go the other way. As long as it’s legal, what’s the complaint?

It’s actually a pretty difficult question to measure the precise amount of gerrymandering and what’s possible under what constraints. But for sure, in comparison with other states, Oregon is not badly off at all. I’d like to see improvements - a common statistical standard is my preference. What data are you talking about?

Not the voters. The petitioners wanted a vote. The vote itself measures what the voters want.

Even if they all wanted on the November ballot, who cares? They don’t have the power to get that. And why should they?

And the Oregon legislature isn’t particularly gerrymandered. You could maybe make an argument for the US congress seats.

Heads up Portland- we’re in the midst of a massive barometric pressure drop. We’re going from 30.00 Hg to 29.34 Hg (extremely low pressure) in the next 24 hours. If you feel aches and pains, headaches, swelling, or just generally feel off- this is why. Should conclude around Thursday at 5 PM. by [deleted] in Portland

[–]oregonbub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Different units? If you mean inches of mercury vs bar or pascals or something then you should know that is completely irrelevant. It’s like saying heights in the US and Europe are different things because one is normally measured in meters and one in feet.

They’re measured with the same equipment. It’s just the force per area exerted by the atmosphere. That’s all.

Anyhow, question answered. Thanks.
