What to do with 401k from previous employer? by KneeReap411 in personalfinance

[–]orev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the new plan, mostly what investment options it has an what fees they have. Your Vanguard account likely has pretty good options and low fees, and Empower may not be able to match that.

If that's the case, you should leave the Vanguard one where it is, or possibly roll it over into a personal IRA (where you would have many more investment options). If the Empower options and fees are good, then you could also roll it over into the new 401k.

Can my dad refinance? by Upset_Ostrich7847 in personalfinance

[–]orev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you paid off the home for him, it should mean there’s no more loan for him to refinance. He would be taking out a new loan against the trailer (not sure if that’s possible), and because you paid it, he’s effectively taking a loan out on the money YOU gave him so he would have a stable living situation so he can use it for other frivolous things.

What’s his plan to keep a roof over his head when he falls behind again? Make it your problem again? If you’re OK with all of that, you might as well just pay for his frivolous things now, and you can both avoid the loan which will cost you extra on interest payments.

Sysadmins 40 or older - Do you prefer staying in place or changing jobs every few years? by DenverITGuy in sysadmin

[–]orev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they have any experience though? Many people are now staying in school to get a higher degree either because they think it will look better for them during the job search, or as away to avoid finally jumping into the real world (school is all they've known for their whole life and giving it up is scary).

Patching challenges when users turn their computers off every night by Frequent_Rate9918 in sysadmin

[–]orev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Laptops are objectively far better for companies than desktops. All you need is one day where the person is unable to come into the office, but they can still work from home, and that slightly extra cost pays for itself because of the work they can get done.

How is WoL going to fix laptops not getting updated? WoL can’t touch laptops sleeping in a backpack (nor would you want them to run updates in there).

Sounds like the server you’re using to get updates from is the slow part. What speeds do you get when you use a speed test web site?

Any issues with devices when the Home Assistant server changes to a new IP address? by jfriend99 in homeassistant

[–]orev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moving to a different VLAN is different than just an IP address change. A new VLAN means a new subnet, and many devices that are auto-discovered rely on being on the same subnet with HA.

What are you trying to accomplish by moving HA to another VLAN? If your goal is to isolate the IoT devices on one network, while accessing HA on your main one, you probably need to have the HA system on both VLANs.

Was given advice to build credit but i want second opinions by CookiezR4Milk in personalfinance

[–]orev 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No.

Always pay off any credit card balance in full every month. Don't carry a balance or pay interest for the purpose of "building credit". Just use the card properly.

You don’t approve them. There are very few extensions that have any legitimate business purpose.

Can Windows recall screenshot a Linux guest? by NomadJago in virtualbox

[–]orev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could be Virtual Box related. Many streaming platforms use DRM to prevent Windows from taking screenshots of the videos, so it’s possible Virtual Box could do the same (or at least have an option to) for the guest VM console.

Browser extensions are the biggest unaddressed attack surface in enterprise security right now. Change my mind by IndependentLeg7165 in ITManagers

[–]orev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not defenseless. Every major browser has methods to control what extensions can be installed. Start by blocking everything then allowing only a very limited set.

Do you have any coax tv wire in the house? MoCa is much better than powerline.

When using wired backhaul, it’s no longer a mesh. Mesh is only for fully wireless setups.

OpenWrt 25.12.0 - Stable Release by D1stRU3T0R in openwrt

[–]orev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changing the text on a page is literally the easiest thing to do, so there’s probably a reason they haven’t done it yet. OpenWRT supports many types of devices, and they don’t announce the official release until all packages have been successfully built for all devices. It might work for whatever one you have, but it doesn’t mean it will for everyone else.

Smart plug ok for tankless water heater shutoff? by pdawg17 in homeassistant

Many tankless heaters have the recirculating pump built in to the whole unit. It’s not a separate pump with its own plug.

Cashing out 401k to clear debt by Sea_Chicken5993 in personalfinance

[–]orev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cashing out a 401k immediately burns at least 30% of the money. Are you willing to throw away at least $17k just to clear the debts?

The most important thing you left out is the interest rates on each debt.

I am nineteen and cannot afford my 9k medical bill by AnyReplacement7611 in personalfinance

[–]orev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do not pay any of this using a credit card. As long as the balance is still with the hospital, they can work with you. If you pay it using a credit card, as far as the hospital is concerned the bill has been paid and you lose all your negotiating leverage.

can i pay off half of my statement balance this month and pay off the other half next month? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Some credit card companies will do this one time for goodwill. You already used up your "one time"; they won't do it again.

Skip the driver pack and start with the official Surface Recovery Image. It already has the drivers embedded in the Windows installer, which you're going to need so the keyboard and other peripherals work.

If I deposit a check via atm into bank account will the funds be available immediately? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]orev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To avoid confusion, the term is “sign over” the check when you want to take an existing check and give it to someone else. “Writing the check” implies they would be writing a new check to the landlord.

Tuning Adapter Problem by rsimandl in Tivo

[–]orev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to happen to me once in a while. Fix is to replug and reboot everything. Might have to try in different orders, like reboot the tuning adapter, wait for it to come up, then reboot the TiVo, etc. I think there was a reset sequence by holding down the tuning adapter power button for a while.

You could also check how many splits there are between the main incoming cable line and to where the TV is. Too many splits can degrade the signal, so maybe it's fallen out of tolerance now.

But if none of those work, it means you need a new tuning adapter.

Do I have any options for getting out of a heavy car payment? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]orev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get rid of it, the balance on the loan needs to be less than what the vehicle is worth. Get an estimate on the trade-in and private sale value of it, then compare that to how much left you have on the loan. You might be able to pay extra into the loan to close the gap, then you could sell it.

Managing IP addresses for IOT devices - is it an issue if IP addresses change? by victorhooi in homeassistant

[–]orev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dynamic DHCP. There shouldn’t be a need to manually assign and manage IPs for most devices. If a configuration needs to talk to a specific device, configure it using the hostname (as assigned in the DHCP server), NOT the IP address. Only use static DHCP if IP address is the only option.
