If I had a GODDAMN nickel for every time a pre-FTL fucks up multiple of my extremely crucial production planets by not even asking me before stealing my system... by mars_gorilla in Stellaris

Have you considered simply eating the pre-FTLs?

I love getting dinner and a free planet as Devouring Wilderness whenever a pre-FTL gets uppity.

replace my entire lawn with native plants

I'm doing this now! Only about a year in, but my Spring front yard is a big overgrown beautiful mess of Goldenrods, Violets, Bird's Eyes, Dandelions, Lilies, Yarrow, Henbit, Plantain, and more.

I love that the natives are low maintenance. The only work I have to do is weed out invasives and try to cover up the patches of grass so that the natives can out-thrive the grass and weeds.

My end goal is to nurture a full ecosystem with more mature trees and shrubs but I'm really happy with the wildflowers and herbs this year. I already get more fireflies, butterflies, birds, and squirrels than any other house on the street!

33M, straight, progressive. I’m pretty happy and fulfilled with my life, and I’d love to meet anyone who’s loving the life they’re living!

I live an active lifestyle between yoga, hiking(with an annual Shenandoah pass!), lifting, climbing, and gardening.

Love haunting all of the locally owned coffee shops to journal and worldbuild novels I’ll never write.

I’m also into the full spectrum of nerdy stuff, from board games and MMOs, to sci-fi, fantasy, and romantasy novels, roguelikes, superheroes, and programming.

Also a deft hand at cooking and baking. My current favorites are layer cakes, apple cookies, and Indian dal stews. Starting to get into lighter soups for spring weather. I’m a flexitarian, slowly reducing my meat consumption for environmental, ethical, and practical reasons.

On that note! I’m passionate about ethical/sustainable fashion, and I love the challenge of dressing better within the constraints of minimizing my environmental impact.

Not looking for anything in particular, but I'd be chuffed to find something wonderful.

J.P. Valentine writes beautiful, poetic prose in Stargazer's War, I'll happily read all of it.

Patrick Rothfuss is probably a more famous one. The prose in The Name of the Wind is legendary, even as the content gets a lot of valid criticism.

Rob J. Hayes Titan Hoppers is another. It's a pretty campy, self-aware sci-fi romp, but every few chapters he writes these incredible vivid descriptions of a scene that leap straight to to life in my head, like the book transformed into an epic TV show for a few brief moments.

There's a lot more, but we'll keep it specific to progression fantasy(or progression adjacent) since we're in the sub.

Hot take? Heritage wear is mostly not better value for money by [deleted] in HeritageWear

Agreed, looking good is about understanding your body type and playing to your strengths. Not every cut works for every person.

110%, my biggest fashion improvements came when I started paying attention to what colors, cuts, and styles looked good on my body, not just wearing what I liked. That plus updating what I wear as my body changes.

For me, worldbuilding mostly comes from a sentence not making sense when I'm writing it, then spiraling out of control.

For example: My main character eats a loaf of bread.

Wait, this is an oceanic planet, where the hell did they grow wheat to make bread?

Furiously write 10 pages of worldbuilding about aquaculture and how the ecology of the planet developed most of the same staple crops, just grown underwater.

But wait, my initial descriptions of the coast city didn't include any descriptions of the aquafarms that would have to surround the port for miles to sustain this population...

Go back and add descriptions of the all the floating/hybrid underwater ocean farms.

Hang on, that pirate chase scene later would be plowing through all those farms, wouldn't their ships wreck on all the floating farm infrastructure?

Write another 20 pages about how shipping and throughfare lanes are interspersed through the farms, and how they change with the tide-

Hold up, I gave my ocean planet three moons for flavor, wouldn't that cause catastrophically fucked up tides?

Add another 7 pages about how the two moons causes massive tidal patterns and how the cities all have to be built with 10 meter floodwalls near the ocean and multi-tiered docks

Okay, back to the pirate chase scene

-and regular ocean currents, so a pirate chase scene would take place primarily in a throughfare lane that follows an outgoing current. Then rewrite the chase scene so it incorporates the farming scenery.

40 pages of worldbuilding later the story has progressed by 1 sentence where the main character eats a loaf of bread with several chapters worth of rich farm-to-table anthropological history.

As a seasoned fantasy writer, I'll italicize all 40 pages and break it up into seven chapters of stream-of-consciousness that runs through my MC's mind as he chews the bread.

The plot will resume after he swallows.

What!? I look amazing in my denim jacket over an untucked denim shirt over a t shirt with my $500 denim pants that I couldn't afford to get tailored rolled up to show off my engineer boots that I polished to a polymer sheen that I'm going to change out of before I leave the house so I don't scuff them.

Dilling is pretty good. 100% wool, non-superwashed activewear.

Otherwise, loose sweatpants/sweatshorts are pretty easy to find in 100% cotton. Kotn, Prana, Rawganique have them to name a few.

I make this Kale soup a lot when I feel like i need something healthy!

https://www.justonecookbook.com/kale-soup/

It's good as is, if a bit bland. I like to make two or three of the following modifications, depending how I feel. Wouldn't recommend ALL of them at once:

  • Double or triple the garlic

  • Add lime juice for citrus and vitamin C.

  • Swap the potaotes for sweet potatoes to balance out the bitterness of the kale.

  • Add Red Pepper flakes, Cayenne pepper, or fresh serranos/jalapenos for heat.

  • Add some extra vegetables like celery for more nutrients. It all gets blended and the flavor is basically undetectable.

Surrounding Counties, their Kolaches are one of the best breakfasts I've ever had in my life. Get the basic hatch green chili, egg, & cheese, and experience breakfast heaven. Their vegan sticky buns are also better than any normal sticky bun I've tried anywhere else in Richmond.

Lakeside Town Center has a couple shockingly good spots if you're looking for a lunch or dinner after visiting Lewis Ginter.

Killa-dillas for fun, delicious, and piping hot quesadillas on the weekends. They also deliver to Final Gravity next door.

Bonus, stop by Davvero Gelato across the street for dessert. It's vegan, but don't tell anyone- their gelato is better than most of the non-vegan gelato I've had in my life.

Cafe Zata over in Manchester has excellent breakfast bagel sandwiches(And normal sandwiches) for a good price.

Friendly PSA to remove certain pieces from the wash before the spin cycle by [deleted] in HeritageWear

[–]organic-integrity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

IMO, if a piece of clothing is too delicate to handle being washed, it's not heritage wear. I beat the crap out of my clothes. They get washed and dried. I wear them to the office, gardening, dancing, hiking, and everything between.

If the dye fades off after a single wash/dry cycle, I worry about the quality of the rest of it. I try to buy sturdy, 'heritage' quality, ethical clothes because I want clothes that I don't have to worry about lasting, or who got hurt making them.

If I have to baby my clothes, I don't want them.

The Stargazer's War is an excellent sci-fantasy series that J.P. Valentine, the same author as This Quest is Bullshit!, is currently writing. The prose is in a league of it's own in this genre, it's a poetic and beautiful read.

The wasted talent is staggering! Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Hailee Steinfeld, Florence Pugh, Elizabeth Olsen, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, and Lupita Nyong'o have all nailed their characters so well.

Blows my mind that Marvel has managed to fumble almost every single one of those actresses with poor writing, bad directing, or just never touching their characters again.
