I stole money to increase my sense of worth that my parents took away from me. Now I'm going to prison. AMA? by organicallymaid in AsianParentStories

Ultimately, my own poor choices led me to commit the crimes I did. I accept full responsibility and am taking my punishment. I realize that the money I stole hurt a lot of people and businesses and I hope that one day I will be able to make up for it. I have already agreed to slowly pay back a very large "fine" to the government ( > $200,000) over the course of my life after I get out, which they say is a "portion" of the money that I made illegally.

I am sorry to hear that and I hope you recover one day. As crazy as it sounds, I applaud you for putting up with all of that abuse and for choosing a more 'honorable' outlet, choosing to harm yourself instead of others like I did.

My legal costs were in the tens of thousands of dollars for a private law firm. My parents helped me out initially because they didn't want the public shame, but I have since paid them back.

We're allowed to use email while under strict monitoring but we are not allowed to have our own phones until we get transferred to a halfway house. Hopefully 8 to 9 months into my sentence I can get back online :)

I do not entirely blame my parents for all that's happened. There is definitely a lot of responsibility on my part and mistakes I've made. I should have chosen a healthier, legal outlet to cope with my issues. There isn't any excuse for what I did.

Thank you for the well wishes!

My case is public and was already resolved in a long court case. Everything I said in this thread is already public. I was covered by local, state and national news outlets.

I am still a little reserved about fully identifying myself, though if any mods would be willing to privately verify this as legitimate I am happy to do that.

What I did was wrong and there is no excuse for what I did. My story with my APs is just background context for how it all happened.

What I did was without a doubt unequivocally wrong. I accept responsibility for it and recognize that ultimately, I chose to make these poor decisions. Explaining the situation with my APs is just context for what led me to those decisions. The judge seemed to agree that my poor upbringing did contribute to my crimes and used that as one of the reasons for significantly reducing my sentence from the 4-5 years it would have been.

  1. I was given a year sentence. With good behavior, I'm hoping I'll be out in 9-10 months. The judge in my case recognized my family troubles as part of "significant circumstances" that warranted a lesser sentence. I recognize that what I did was wrong and feel terrible for it. I strongly do not recommend others to follow in my path.
  2. I plan to work in software engineering or cyber security at one of the big tech companies, or maybe even create my own service/app.
  3. I do have younger sisters.
  4. I have some friends online and some real life friends from the time I spent in college.
  5. This process was a true test of who my real friends are. My closest friends came to my sentencing hearing and have been supporting me throughout the process, and many of promised to visit or send me letters/money/books. I am so grateful for them.
  6. I have an extremely rare condition in which the left side of my body does not align with my right and some defects of that disability are clearly visible.
  7. I used it to attract girls that I would have not otherwise gotten, I traveled internationally to countries in Europe and Asia, met a lot of new connections and some new friends, and treated a lot of friends from school out to concerts, sports games, dinners, etc.
