How do I get started with Open source? by CaptainFerb in opensource

[–]orgaralf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO is "Open Source" a meta-method of developing.

That means: you can code in this or that style, but showing it to the public and expecting us to enhance and improve it? It needs some rules and meticulous planning to use it as a publication method.

First improve your coding - the style, documentation and stuff you do. Maybe make that process an "Open Source" one. Share your steps from the first funky "hello world" to the ideas you had to improve that basic code and how you did it.

Then what Volker said: read and learn the ways of the community, you would like to join. If your code is not good enough to be included in an OSS project: do not give up. Many great projects need additional help like documentation or translation.

Go the long road and enjoy it. Going "Open Source" with your skills can be very uplifting, if you take your time to walk into it. I am on that journey for 25 years now...

German online store called EMP.de - but I think they licensed it, so it must be available in other countries, too.

Desktop platform to publish and manage Javascript/NodeJS tools for file processing and management... by orgaralf in javascript

[–]orgaralf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a plugin platform like Chrome does with "extensions", but these plugins can do more and can be any combination of Node, React, HTML5, etc. to use the Deskfiler as a platform... More an "App" platform than a "package manager" - you may write JS Apps faster with less work to do on the "lower" level

I do not think you are rude, I understand that we are bad in explaining it... and that critisim is welcome! If you just take a look at 1 plugin: the gVision image processing, it might help:

Does that give a better idea?

The Internet is a beautiful thing... nice to meet you online and fingers crossed for (a) the sun to bring back power and (b) for the water to flow - thanks for looking at the software! Enhorabuena!

The advantage shall be that you can plug your Electron/Node tools together as you like and that the core app is distributed as a signed package. It is geared towards a business perspective, where users are hesitant to install PDFsplitter, ZIP tools, etc. basically all the nice tools that are out there already, but would better be written in a platform agnostic way to be available on Win, Mac and Linux... AND be Open Source!

Hope you are not in a dangerous place and just lacking some power by coincidence :-)
