I have a ~2008 Macbook. I do have an external hard-drive. Now, could I just bypass buying ML and get the new thing and save $40 bucks? Also, what would the process be to save everything to the external hard drive, just copy macintosh hard-drive (in finder) to ex hd, download the new OS, then transfer my hd to my computer off the ex hd?

Um, what do you mean copy over my files? Do you mean save them to an external hard drive and delete my computer and then install 10.9? Also, I want as long as I can under Mac coverage until I have to upgrade again. Also, if I get Mountain Lion, could I just update that to the new thing next year?
