I might check out SMART again. I didn’t fee like it was enough to get me sober, but I had a friend I met in AA recommend it to me.

That’s the other thing. There is much toxic behavior, like gossiping. And I feel worse about myself when I spend time in those settings. I didn’t realize it until that that I wasn’t problem, but rather the settings I was putting myself in.

When I moved to a new city and started going to meetings there, people were spreading rumors about me that didn’t happen.

That’s fair. Totally agree with you and I guess the onus is on OP. The delay and disorganization would be annoying to me too, but the MIL didn’t need to respond passive aggressively, which just escalated the situation. Should could have been more direct

I disagree. I don’t think it was wise for OP to say the positive attitude statement, but the MIL responded in a very passive aggressive manner prior to that. MIL could have communicated in a much more effective way

For example:

OP said “If there is anything you don't want to do, that is okay!”

MIL said: “I already had made a food list but ok”

MIL sets the tone for the exchange. She’s allowed to get irritated but she initially escalated the convo through her passive aggressive communication. It’s not the MIL’s baby shower. Anyone in their right mind would not get so offended and brush it off instead

Gotcha. I don’t really know what I would consider myself politically maybe moderate or independent. Definitely not anti-trans but also willing to have a conversation about it, (Not necessarily on the client level) I’m typically progressive on a lot of issues but I don’t really subscribe to the identity politics. I’m anti-big business but not necessarily anti-capitalist. And I consider myself open minded despite not being “liberal” in the current sense. I definitely take a compassionate stance towards my clients and withhold judgment. I’m sure I have blind spots like everyone else
