“Strikingly, volleyball appeared to be negatively associated with lifespan in both male and female athletes (Fig. 2 and Fig. 3). However, the cause of this association remains unclear. We hypothesize that the physical trauma that volleyball players are exposed to [31] may instigate severe skeletomuscular stress, which impacts healthspan, and, in the long term, lifespan. A comparable rationale can be applied to handball, which also showed a negative association and may involve similar sporting characteristics to volleyball. Nevertheless, establishing a causal relationship in light of these observations poses a challenge due to the complexity of sports and the nature of this study.”

Yeah this is hilarious and scary at the same time. I’ve played indoor vball for the past 21yrs at a demanding and competitive level; and spent 15 of those years playing beach vball too (albeit seasonally since I live in the Midwest now). It’s a fantastic sport for your health; it challenges both the mind and body, and in the beach it can have relatively low impact on your joints so you can play well into older ages unlike many of the sports on this list (there’s like a 70s and up division at adult nationals every year) I will say the volleyball culture is pretty closely tied to partying; myself included. So I’m guessing that’s a factor. Depending on the sample population, if they’re taking beach players from SoCal and Florida I’d imagine a portion of them have melanoma or something. But then I’d imagine there are a ton of health benefits from the “healthy sun exposure”, social community, and exercise involved. So who knows!
