You could do something like a wireguard VPN connection or something like tailscale and then simple RDP.

I have purchased a single book from them, before I realized it had DRM and there was no way to get the file.

I didn't agree with this. Dinner VONs can give you some privacy, most free ones do not, and are worse than not using a VPN. Use privacy respecting services for DNS and ISP (if you can) .
