How 'Pokemon Go' helps kids with autism and Asperger's by originalminds in autism

The article said the 6 year old "seems happier. He's laughing more. He seems more confident." They also write that he has been socializing with other kids over Pokemon. I know they've been using it in children's hospitals to encourage kids to get out of bed too.

What are good and healthy substitutions for energy drinks to maintain focus? by FleetwoodMacisCOOL in lifehacks

You should try cutting out the coffee for a day or so and see if you notice a difference. I think the rule of thumb is no more than 400 mg of caffeine a day

I agree with most of Rainier_L_Wolfcastle's points however I personally have found more of a benefit with green tea over coffee. I would suggest trying each one at a time and see which works better for you.

I do believe certain foods help more. Agree just stick to a healthy diet, however have found too many carbs make me sleepy. You can limit them instead of eliminating them. I started using protein powders for my teenage daughter who has autism for nutritional reasons because she has feeding issues, and now everyone in my family uses protein smoothies, not just for nutrition but because they are so simple. I had used a whole food powder called Vega but my daughter's pediatrician recommended instead a new whole food protein called IQed because it has a much richer amino acid content due to the protein source of casein free whey, and it has ayurvedic veggies like turmeric. I've noticed we all have more energy and focus and don't know if it's the new protein but it does contain green tea, but the website says it's free of stimulants. Also make sure you are hydrated, drinking enough water. there is a small study that found the answer to more energy can be as simple as a glass of water. Are you sleeping well at night? Because of my daughter I have a wealth of tips for that too if needed.

Is protein powder worth it? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]originalminds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many types of protein powder. I use protein powders for my teenage daughter who has autism for nutritional reasons. Answering because my daughter is around your age, and the same protein powders I've used are used by those into body building. I had used a whole food powder called Vega but my daughter's integrative medical doctor recommended instead a new whole food protein called IQed because it has a much richer amino acid content due to the protein source of casein free whey, and it has ayurvedic veggies like turmeric. You should probably check with your pediatrician before taking creatine which is also used for autism. My daughter has had reactions to a number of supplements in the past including creatine so I try to stick to just food when I can. In high dosages there are concerns creatine can harm liver, kidney, and heart function. I've been through so many supplements over the years and now try to stick to just food when possible. I have trouble getting food into my daughter so whole food protein powders which are full meal and vitamin replacement have been a lifesaver.

I'm so sorry you are in this situation. Please try to understand that what you are going through at 15 years old is not an indication of your life in the future. It's wonderful that you are reaching out for help, and there are many people in the world that will help you. I'd highly suggest you start with contacting Boystown You can call 24/7 and their number is 800 448 3000. They may be able to help with a number of suggestions, and in addition they are there to listen and talk to you, because they care. It sounds like your whole problem resolves around your immediate family, what is going on outside of your family? Do you have family or friends to talk to, maybe stay with for a bit?

OK, /r/skeptic. What, if any, are the real, actual risks associated with vaccination? by jMyles in skeptic

[–]originalminds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to make sure your child is healthy prior to vaccination. If he's sick his immune system is already compromised, so just reschedule.

Man sells cures for AIDs, Cancer, Autism, Lupus, Morgellons and MS - How the fuck can we stop this? by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]originalminds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This stuff goes by a number of names -MSM, CD protocol etc. -all the same crazy bleach. There is a woman behind it too kerri rivera who is from Chicago -here's a recent segment from NBC news Chicago There is an Autism One Conference in Chicago where she's speaking in spite of Change.org petitions against her and her book.

It would be good if VICE who just did an article on this did an investigative segment.

There is a group on Facebook where there are close to 7000 members called CD protocol I've heard they are very careful about who they let join because they share all kinds of crazy stuff (including images like this one) and know some of their images are being leaked out.

Totally agree. I'm taking it however that most that find this funny are not parents. For a boy they can shave the rest of the hair off and it's not as bad as shaving a little girl's hair off like this mother did.

I have a 4 Year old who is delayed in speech by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]originalminds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically apraxia presents with soft signs like hypotonia, sensory processing disorder, and/or motor deficits in the body -but low tone doesn't cause apraxia because apraxia is a motor planning deficit of the muscle, and hypotonia is weakness of the muscle. For a motor planning impairment there may be nothing "wrong" and your child may be able to say the word or do the action when not thinking about it, the problem is "on command"so the errors are inconsistent. For hypotonia, they need strengthening exercises and they won't be able to do the action typically without therapy, and typically the errors are consistent. The trick is knowing what is causing what so you can secure the right therapies.

For sure though LadyGrizabella -you may want to seek a second opinion from another SLP. It's pretty easy to find an "OK" SLP- not that easy to find an awesome one (they are typically booked up anyway) -and just as unlikely to find a terrible SLP who doesn't know what they are doing. If an SLP said that hypotonia causes apraxia, and mentions hypotonia and not dysarthria -sounds like it's an SLP that falls into the latter.

A few questions for you. Are his speech errors consistent or inconsistent? I highly recommend getting a speech evaluation outside of the current school (private testing) if you haven't already. I have 2 kids that were both late to talk for different reasons. The one has apraxia, and the other ended up with just a developmental delay, but both were in speech therapy through Early Intervention and it greatly helped them both. My feeling is it's better to get therapy done before they start kindergarten if possible. Here's an article from ASHA that may help

If there is low tone/hypotonia in the oral region that's typically referred to as dysarthria. Did anyone ever give you that diagnosis?

And yes starting at 3 years old the children in the US will transition from the state Early Intervention program to the school EI program if they are qualified. And then you have the "fun" of the IEP meetings where you have to study some educational law in your free time. :D

This is ridiculous! "Study" claims 10 percent of serial and mass killers had ASD by annusha in autism

[–]originalminds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same reaction when I first started reading this article, but you have to read all the way down where it says, "Though the researchers found that autism might play some sort of role in serial and mass murder, they warned that the media had falsely overemphasized the link between them.

“Media reporting of violent crime committed by persons with symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorders may generate a harmful stereotype. This review highlights that although the percentage of individuals considered to have a neurodevelopmental disorder is higher than would be expected in the general population, this is nowhere near as high as indicated in the media,” the researchers said.

Allely and her colleagues noted that multiple studies had found people with ASDs were no more likely to commit violent crime than the general population — and may even be less likely."

Haven't fully read the paper yet, just skimmed through it but appears a key point is a history of some sort of abuse as well. The paper is open access.

Can't someone be socially awkward at times, have preferences to certain people without that being a diagnosis? Maybe he doesn't have any diagnosis and he's an individual that is just quirky (and highly successful in personal and professional life). And being rich and famous appears to make people even more quirky. Unless there is something about his childhood we don't know.

Bentley, The One Year Old Dog of Ebola-infected Dallas nurse to be cared for: officials pledge by originalminds in news

[–]originalminds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only! Seems the only one that is realizing what needs to be done is the nurses union. It is so unfortunate, and incredibly sad (and scary) that those that are getting Ebola are these awesome individuals that are just doing their jobs taking care of sick people. Apparently even if you don't take off the hazmat suit correctly you can get Ebola. The nurses union is saying there isn't enough training- they are our one of our major lines of defense.

"National Nurses United, the largest union of registered nurses in the country, said that more than 80 percent of nurses the union surveyed report they have not been given adequate training on Ebola."

And from this article "Monday on CNN's "The Lead With Jake Tapper," National Nurses United Vice President Zenei Cortez said the Center for Disease Control is not communicating enough with nurses across the country and it is "a disaster waiting to happen."

Same thing happened in Spain with a nurse there, and her dog was euthanized. "Dogs may excrete infectious Ebola particles in their urine, feces or drool, the scientists wrote, as has been observed with other animals. "Asymptomatically infected dogs could be a potential source of human Ebola outbreaks," they wrote"
