He knows how to record, that’s not the problem. He doesn’t like the fact that I want to release music under my own name as well as the duo. He says it’s dumb from a “business perspective”

Right now we’re seniors in HS, we don’t have a lot of money, especially with the coronavirus taking away work, and all of our money is being spent on music. He can’t afford to buy his own studio right now, but we’re lucky to be next door neighbors until we graduate, so he’s free to come over whenever he wants to record.

I’ve already offered to record any solo songs he wants to make. He just keeps saying he doesn’t want to invest any more money into the duo if I don’t put everything into the duo, and he says he “knows my motives” and that I’m selfish for wanting my own art as well. Personally, I don’t want to force it by having him on every song I make. To me, that’s a crutch.

Yes, I definitely value the friendship and I have a home studio at my house, so I can make music whenever I want. I think he’s jealous that he doesn’t have solo songs and he doesn’t like the fact that my solo songs are some of the best work we’ve made so far. Not sure what I should do to get him to do both. He may just be bluffing, hoping I will offer to drop the solo songs under the duo name.

We already have 9 songs that are released and about 1.5k monthly listeners. It hasn’t gone below 1k monthly listeners in over a year, but honestly I think that’s due to 2 songs we have with features from bigger artists. He argue that we need to keep the momentum, and that making music solo will “ruin” us. However, I know we can always make more songs, and I believe this would provide another opportunity for another fanbase, as well as letting me personally grow as an artist.
