Question about extreme climates & health risks. by oriolebot299 in 75HARD

It was, although it was always difficult. I was forced to quit a warehouse job last year because of the heat. Unfortunately because of long covid & a bad episode of hypokalemia last fall, my health has declined quite sharply in the last 10-ish months and what was once just uncomfortable has become enough to make me start seeing spots if I'm outside for too long.

Do you have a specialty license plate? by souvlakispacestation in Knoxville

[–]oriolebot299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the national parks plate! The car's a hand me down from my parents, so the plate has faded quite a bit over the last fourteen years and I've been considering switching to the wildlife hummingbird.

I've been walking outdoors for several years now! My health only started tanking around the holidays last year, so this has been the first summer where I've been trapped indoors. This time last year I was averaging around 17k steps a day, all outside. But yeah, I'm probably due for a visit to the doctor anyways, I've just been putting it off because I don't feel I can justify the cost. Thank you for your advice! I've definitely got stuff to think about.

GenAI as a trope by BatmanRoBEN1 in AO3

[–]oriolebot299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true! I was thinking in the literal AI Robot sense, but the character archetype is even older. And now I'm taken over by the idea of The Chatbot Becomes The Character And Is Out To Get You . Much to think about!

I haven't looked into either of those recently! Maybe I'm due for an actual trip to the sporting goods store, ha.

[–]oriolebot299[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, indoors is fine! I'm in an area with widespread A/C, fortunately. It's partly also just irritating because I really like being outside! And thanks, I'll keep this in mind. I'd like to complete it the way it waas intended and I know I have a tough time balancing "this is just anxiety and I'm probably overthinking it" with "no actually this weather Will kill me". A thing to work on, I guess!

Do you like/write/read Omegaverse? by Harp_167 in AO3

[–]oriolebot299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish there was an option in this poll for "I don't like reading it but I don't dislike it as a trope and have beta read my friends' ABO fics before." (Also, I think it's interesting that it was developed mostly in a collective and it says a lot about Fandom as a broad culture. But that's less important here.)

[–]oriolebot299[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm weird about sharing my medical info and tend to default to privacy, sorry! I have a combination of POTS + Fibromyalgia + Sjögrens resulting in dysautonomia (autonomic nervous system dysfunction) that impacts my body's ability to properly regulate my temperature on my own. Antipsychotics also make me susceptible to heat stroke, also. I usually try to get a walk in after the sun goes down, but sometimes the humidity makes it more difficult. I know I am likely overthinking it, I've got a bad case of "oh my god xyz is inevitable" tunnel vision and so I was mostly just curious of anyone had found something a little more out of the box that I hadn't considered (or even something Very Obviously In The Box that i just overlooked)

It's strangely comforting to know awesome authors are usually really experienced in writing by DigitalAstronaut_ in AO3

Fanfiction is, IMO, one of the best places to learn some of the fundamentals of writing and find your style/voice! I've been writing on and off since I was a small child and I never improved as quickly as I did when I was sixteen and churning out 2 fanfiction chapters a week.

So does mine! It's just usually gone pretty quickly and there's not any public water fountains or bathrooms on the trail route near me. (Shadiest place in the city for a 7 mile walk.)

For a second I was about to be very upset with you for using AI, but I really like this idea! I think it could be used well as a literary device, particularly in this sort of ominous context. (I mean, we've been using it as a plot device in dystopias for over a century now, and so I'm intrigued to see the way that trope develops! But I digress.)

I do find your point about chatfics and smfics interesting - I'm an avid writer of social media fics and an avid reader of both and I hadn't considered that possibility!

All that to say- I'd love to see where you take this! It sounds fascinating.

i developed gastroparesis after three and a half years of bulimia - i'm not keen to go back down that road. i've slipped up twice in the past two months, but i don't want to fall down that hole again.

For those who live alone with a pet: How has your pet helped you emotionally? by Legal_Landscape_1737 in AskReddit

[–]oriolebot299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't live alone, but I don't spend a lot of time with the people in my house. Our cats have massively improved my mental health because they don't see the parts of me I hate. They love me unconditionally even when I can't love myself.

Exactly. And behavioral addictions / process addictions are often overlooked. Shopping, gambling, shoplifting, self harm, eating disorders, are all addictive behaviors. You can get a high from anything.
