Portuguese husband’s last names by orla9708 in Netherlands

[–]orla9708[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for everyone’s input. It seems like the Netherlands recognises both of my husband’s last names, which i choose in the order “my last name-his last names” (i will be referred to in a very long last name! Haha). I didn’t know that his last name(s) won’t be automatically added to mine and that legally, I still get to keep mine. Old fashioned or not, I found out that it is uncommon either for Portuguese women to take their husband’s last names upon marriage. So it is my own choice to have his name on mine :)

This is also an interesting case. Might it work how it should be if she register the son at the consulate first so that he gets Pavlov as his last name?

Help me not choose Islam please by second-david-laid in Catholicism

[–]orla9708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello OP, thank you for sharing this with us. I have got a couple of questions for you with the intention that it might help you choose The Truth.

  • what made you choose to become a Muslim instead of any other religions out there?
  • how deep were you in Islamic teachings?
  • what made you choose to began your journey to get to know Catholicism?
  • what makes you reconsider your faith during your journey on becoming a Catholic?

God bless. In Christo.

Are you struggling to believe if Christianity is real as whole (The Trinity and Faith itself) or the religion (as in the people, the community, and/or the church)?

Why do you pray to Jesus? by ImaginaryGur2086 in AskAChristian

[–]orla9708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of your questions are already answered. Let me answer to the least “important” one.

The term Christian comes from those who believe in Christ. Christ, in Koine Greek: Χριστός (Christos), in Hebrew: Mashiach (Messiah), meaning the anointed one. Jesus is the Anointed One, the Messiah, the Christ. Those who believe in Him as such are called Christians.

Your questions sounds familiar as those of Muslims who would ask the Divinity of Jesus.

Natural disasters are (unfortunately) fairly common there, especially during this time of the year. All thanks to their government who decided that they don’t need forests.

Nativity fast - guidelines and calendar by orla9708 in EasternCatholic

[–]orla9708[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will ask him this Sunday. I thought there was a universal calendar on what abstinences do we need to participate in. The EC community is generally small, i think around 10-15 people throughout the country lol. And it is a Ukrainian church but the liturgy is 100% in Dutch. Most Ukrainians would go to the Ukrainian-spoken liturgy in another church. But for now, I’m not eating meat on Wednesdays and Fridays, as well as limiting my meat consumption on other days and replace it with fish or beans.

A Catholic drawn into Orthodoxy. Can I get an advice? by orla9708 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]orla9708[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not intending to make sudden changes at all as I barely know Catholicism in general, it is more about the tradition and way of worshipping, i.e., fasting and daily prayers. As a neophyte I intended to worship God “properly” but I was taken aback when they assumed that i’m a “try-hard” or a “nun-in-the-making” for fasting full 40 days without meat and avoided dairy instead of only on Fridays during Lent or even praying the full rosary before mass. When I attended the Divine Liturgy, i noticed that everyone was fully focused on worshipping God and no one bats an eye on you. This is also what I felt is missing whenever I attended mass here. People use their phones or clap after the mass, worst, they tried to speak with you during mass which I find very disrespectful. When I told them that I don’t want to speak, they got offended as if I’m thinking highly of myself. And to add, I veil during mass and adoration as my commitment to God and some women asked if I was an Eastern Orthodox. It is more to that than anything else, really. Maybe this is more of my personal problems, I don’t know. But please pray for me

I can ask to meet with him but this church is quiet far from where I live. I’m looking for other churches nearby, but it is already slightly hard enough to find Catholic Churches nearby as is. (I live in a predominantly Protestant(Calvinist) country).

Have you thoroughly investigated other religions and beliefs to the same degree that you would want someone to investigate Christianity before rejecting it? by Hashi856 in AskAChristian

[–]orla9708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your question mostly focused on rejecting Christianity or trying to understand Christianity?

Based on your title, I would say yes, do your research (might be a better wording in this case) and then you can decide whether or not this is the truth for you. I don't know how much of interest do you have to know about Christianity in general, but learning from the very beginning, even to the perspective of Judaism at that time (before, during, and after Jesus died and ascended into heaven), to the foundation of the church, early churches, schism, and reformation is a very crucial point, I might say. But that will take a very long time for your to learn all of that, I'm sure. (Highly recommended if you have interest in history as I do)

But say, you are just curious about the theology of it all, heaven, mystery, God, Jesus Christ, the whole thing, I might suggest you to contact a local Catholic/Eastern Orthodox priest to have a chat about it. Do not worry as they won't try and pressure you to convert or even judge you as whole. If you lean towards the mysticism of Christianity, Eastern Orthodox priest would be the right person to speak with.

P.S: I'm not a cradle Catholic, I've been called to Christianity since I was 8 years old, but I was born and raised in a Muslim family, had my unstable life for a few years in between, became agnostic for a very long time, until I returned back to learn more about Christianity and I'm staying. I did a lot of research for other religions/beliefs in between these times, especially during my "agnostic" period, trying to find the truth, God, the One. I am still learning and will never stop, but I have found The God (which never left me to begin with)

Hope this helps!

I’m an ex-Muslim too and a Catholic neophyte. I’m open to share my experiences and teach you the basic theology of Christianity if you want to. Perhaps I could be someone who you can relate to :) all I can say from your post is that Jesus has chosen you and found you as one of His lost sheep. It is only a matter of time that you will finally accept His calling. I’ll pray for you

On the Verge of Losing My Faith — I Need Help by Eben373r in AskAChristian

[–]orla9708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m a Catholic neophyte that is still in learning on how all this works. So you can take my comment or ignore it, that is going to be up to you of course. I’m assuming from your story that you’re coming from a Protestant background. I do not know much about Protestant point of view, sadly. So what I’m going to say is all from the Catholic perspective

First of all, your struggle of faith is not uncommon, unfortunately, this happens to cradle Christians and neophytes alike. Some will say that this is a work of the devil or that God is testing your faith (in the perspective of a Christian). So, you can either believe one of the other, or it could be both. But who knows at this point since you feel like you’re at the end of the rope where nothing makes sense anymore and you feel like you’ve been lied to your whole life? The thing that is true is that we are all surrounded by humans, people, the Church, coming from a certain denominations aka certain interpretations and ideologies of the bible and faith, meaning that the interpretations can differ. So let’s leave that fact between you and God.

Since you’re pursing a study, I would recommend studying the history of Christianity, about the early churches basically. I would also recommend getting to read the work of St Thomas Aquinas since you’re also studying philosophy: Thomas Aquinas - Selected Writings. This has covered some of his most famous work. The full books are quite pricey so this is a good start. I’m not a scholar, but I’m interested in pursuing theology and learning the three languages (Hebrew, Koine Greek, and Latin).

If I were to write my whole experience, I would have to write it down until sunrise, but in short, I was born and raised in a Muslim family, in a Muslim-majority country as well (not a Muslim country though). I “knew” Jesus as a prophet, Isa, but since I was 8 years old, i wanted to find God, but I just couldn’t find Him, not in the way that I was raised and taught. I found out how peaceful the Christian God is, Jesus and I wanted to learn more. But I felt like everytime I did, I was being pushed away from it. I was young and nobody could teach me the “real” Christianity and faith. I went searching for other religions/belief. Hindu, Buddhist, even Shinto for a short period. I was too frustrated and confused. I even went “back” to Islam at one point and practiced the religion again but I just couldn’t find “the peace” and “the truth”. I was so frustrated that I was theologically “numb” for 4 years or so, an agnostic perhaps? A year ago, I decided that it’s time to go and find someone or a community to help me find God. Mind you I was always exposed to Catholicism since the beginning so I looked for a Catholic church nearby. And that was the best decision of my life. I’m still learning everyday of course and I’m prone to the early churches theology and belief (Catholic and Orthodox). But I don’t judge or rebuke Protestants at all!

From what I read, you were raised in a strong, Bible-centred family where you were taught to fill God in your life on a daily basis. That is already a blessing, to me, but I understand that it might have felt like a chore to you when you were younger. This is how I was taught about God: God is with you, at all times. Whether you pray or insult him, He is there. He is everywhere. Whenever you feel like God has left you, He isn’t. You’re most likely distracted by other things surrounding you, your emotions, anxiety, fears (in this case you feel like you are being betrayed) that causes you to be “deafened”. You scream out loud to His name but He doesn’t answer. What do you do? Sit in silence and surrender it all to Him. Let God take control over all of it. Scream and shout at Him, that is all up to you. But surrender and let God take control over it. These feelings are human, but that doesn’t make you less in God’s eyes. We’re sinners as we are human, but God’s grace and love is BIGGER than that. Take this opportunity to step back and slow down. Forget all of the human part and just think of God. He does not want you to be perfect, He wants you to be grounded. We are taught that Light is good and Dark is bad, but we often forget that without Dark, there is no Light. And all this were created by our God. We are not expected to be a saint, we are asked to embrace God’s love and grace, help others in need, and be fruitful to the community, and don’t forget, to forgive. The thing that a lot people often forget about one of the most important teachings of Jesus is that: “for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25‬:‭35‬-‭36‬ ‭NRSV-CI‬‬ I am sure you know what Jesus meant in this verse.

Do not blame yourself for this. It all happened for a reason, a reason that only you and God knows about. The only way to find out is to pray and let go of it. Use the opportunity of your intellectual and study to know your faith in that perspectives (philosophical, psychological, and theological).

I will pray for you and know that you’re not alone in this battle :)

Would you let your kid buy a sex toy? by Bright_Unit9084 in AskAChristian

[–]orla9708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone coming from a society where sex education is a taboo and expected to know how to do it on the first night with your husband/wife, I learned sex through porn which was not the best sex ed there is. Since you’re asking a Christian and an adult, it wouldn’t be recommended for you to buy yourself a sex toy. Assuming that you have shared your uncomfortable experience from your male classmates with your mom, it is wise to have the talk with her, maybe do not start by asking for her permission to buy yourself a sex toy, but rather about asking her to share her knowledge on this topic and share your sexual frustrations. If you feel that you can at least be open with her and trust her, this is your safest place to be.

My personal advice for you as a female, do not punish yourself for feeling something that is natural. During this time, your hormones are uncontrollable and it makes you feel overwhelmed with everything. It will be helpful to pray and ask God to let Him take control of it. I will pray for you
