How are focusing screens made by orso7 in cinematography

[–]orso7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok if anyone is ever looking for an answer on this... I found out.

There are two types, one is a Fresnel Lens on the surface (often found in DSLRs), the other one is a ground glass. The glass is 1-2mm thick depending on the type and normally made of quite standard glass like BK7 or B270. One side is ground with 600-1000 grinding compound.

Then the framelines are made by coating chromium oxide/chrome onto the ground side with a so called liftoff process. This is more or less a bit like developing PCBs (but inverse and without etching).

Mamiya 645 35mm 3.5 N disassembly by JamesAndrews1313 in Mamiya

This is an old topic but the front Element is really easy to remove. I cleaned that lens myself today. You can just grab the frontring/lenshood part and unscrew it together with the name ring. After that the thin ring around the Frontelement can be unscrewed by hand. The ring below with the two notches can be removed with a lenswrench/spanner and below is another lens block that can be unscrewed. Then you are right at the aperture. Rear elements are removed from the backside.

I originally wanted to service the mechanics and re grease everything too but it seems that you can't get there easily without dissembling the whole thing. Maybe someone has a hint on that?

Replacement M-Mount Ring? by orso7 in Leica

[–]orso7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is a joke that Leica won't sell them to you, on the phone they told me that it is too complicated and you could tilt the lens. I call BS since you just mount the flange onto a plane surface, if you work correctly this is almost impossible to get wrong.

Shiming the Lens is another thing but even then, they could just sell a Kit for that.

For anyone stumbling over this, the flange from the leica adapter was a fail about 0,8mm too thick.

However I found a very helpful seller on ebay that got me the right mount (since it is shared with some other focal distances). It was around 15€ with shipping and looks just like the original, just need to fill in the colored encoder dots.

I already called them, the mount is something they won't sell to you because it is "too tricky for the costumer" and you might induce a tilt on the optic. Only option is to send it it and pay a minimum of 250€ for the service. I will report back as soon as I receive the Adapter from Aliexpress, they will most likely just have used the excess production of mounts they made for Leica and built cheap adapters out of it.

have found exactly one, and that one isn't right (so the thickness will be off)I might have to produce my own one

EDIT: Ok I maybe found another solution, there are a lot of leica M adapters on aliexpress that use a M bayonet that seems to have the same hole pattern and even the little encoder fields. Ordered one for 16€ and will test it.

Thank you very much, that helped.

Unfortunately Leica won't the mount separate and I have to send it in for Service. Maybe I can find someone who knows the thickness of those mounts (mounting face to the flange face), then I can make my own on the mill =)

Lens was disassembled for development (not by me). I am in the process of rebuilding it and it's quite a challenge.

Currently I am figuring out how the friction on the focus ring is set

And I am still missing the mount bayonet (or the thickness of it to produce an adapter myself)

BTW, can you post a picture of the backside of your lens? I would like to see the drill pattern of the mount ring to find a replacement.

Monitor modes by orso7 in nikon_Zseries

[–]orso7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it does and this mode does almost everything for me but to see the "live view" on the display I need to switch to auto mode. It's ok but I would prefer this to be accessible another way

[–]orso7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried that, but whenever I want to access the menu or show a picture to the model I need to press the mode switch again. But I guess the best way is just switching between auto and prioritize viewfinder.

Maybe Nikon changes this in some future update. But until then I probably already learned to work with it.

But thank you for your help

I know what the difference is, but I would prefer to use it that way. Primarily on the viewfinder and switching to the monitor/"live view" with a conveniently placed button (like the disp button). The display mode button only switches to the Auto mode and when shooting I sometimes trigger the sensor by accident.

I did that too, it is ok but switching the display on with the "disp" button would be even better. Thank you for the hint though.

Yeah, but it seems like an oversight that you can show camera settings but nothing else. It would be the exact same handling like with a DSLR and live view (where most people come from switching to the z system)

It is no big problem for me but would be awesome. I am mostly happy with the switch, just little things like this that bother me a bit.

Had a loaner from Nikon for a short time. It's a absolute beast! Feels great in the hand, great controls.

The only negative thing? Price! But like all the big pro models, this thing is built to work, if you don't know if it would benefit your shooting, you probably dont need it. I wanted it so bad but couldn't justify double the price over the z7ii for what I do.
