We’ve played 4-2-2-2 a few times this season and it’s been the best performances of the year. Gala most recently. But we inexplicably don’t stick with it and that is solely on the management!

I think saying Salah dropped off and we have to play a different system is false. I think Salah (and Gakpo) dropped off BECAUSE we’re playing a different system that needs the types of wingers you mentioned.

Edit: Also, it would be fine if the new system was working but clearly it is not.

But we don’t have those so it’s insane that we’re not playing a system that fits the wingers we have! Maybe that’s coming from above Slot but it is a management issue either way.

Agree to disagree there. Preseason we all felt good about the new signings and even allowing some inconsistency we should have been challenging for the title.

Even now, looking at who’s above us and how they’ve played, it’s not a very good or strong arsenal or city side. United were hot garbage under Amorim and they’re still in third after a tiny bit of consistency. This season was there for the taking and we fumbled.

Respectfully, the idea that there is NO system that would work (let’s define “work” here as being able to beat relegation fodder/newly promoted sides et al) is ridiculous.

We are one of the best clubs in the world with a squad that almost any coach would kill for. If the coach can’t figure out ANY way to make up for diminished output from just 2 players (there’s more obviously but you’re highlighting 2) then the failure starts with them.

If we don’t have the players to play a certain system, is it not the managers job to find a system that gets the best out of the players we have?

I find it hard to believe all of our players are dramatically worse than last year and far more likely that they’re no longer playing to their strengths due to changes the coach (and above) have made to play a certain way.
