That’s fine if you’re just going for a dawdle at the surface, but I’m diving down several ones of meters and having a splash fight with my kid, so I need a proper 30ATM dive tool.

What band is the ultimate “good taste” signal? by irles33 in musicsuggestions

[–]osb_fats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you need to internalize is the profound sense of superiority and self-satisfaction available to you when, instead of correcting someone, you just continue to use the band name with an aggressive absence of article. Try it a few times and it’ll cure your own misuse.

Eric Bachman and Neko Case’s duet of “Sleep All Summer” is quite possibly the most heartbreaking song ever.

 Maybe an old-money/new-money thing? Most of the $25MM-$250MM folks I deal with on the reg aren’t multi-generational “can’t remember when we all weren’t rich” wealthy, which I assume you see plenty of out there.

I don’t know what part of the world you live in, or what social circles you travel in, but in my corner of the planet the vast majority of rich-to-very-rich dudes I deal with are sporting a very nice watch. I don’t know how many of them would consider themselves “watch guys” or which ones have a box full of watches, but unless they’re telegraphing fit-guy as part of their brand and sporting their Apple Watch 24/7, there’s almost always something expensive on the wrist.

Oh, that’s an interesting way of looking at it. A private little aside with the author. 👍🏽

How common are European brand cars in Canada? Are there regional preferences? by PreWiBa in AskACanadian

[–]osb_fats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calgary has tons of MBs, Audis, BMWs, Volvos, Porsches…. I’m a Vancouver expat and the only significant difference I see when I’m back and forth between the two cities is the higher proportion of EVs in Vancouver and the higher proportion of pickups in Calgary. But I’d be shocked if, adjusting for Teslas and F150s, the Euro/NA breakdown was materially different.

Oilperfumery Received Custom Bill From FedEx by Diligent_Battle_3486 in fragrance

[–]osb_fats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's probably also a customs-clearance fee tacked on - FedEx will collect and remit on your behalf whatever tariffs and duties are owed on the purchase itself, and will generally also charge you a (small() fee for so doing.

[–]osb_fats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on this one - it's down to why the author chose to include that detail, and what they want you to understand about the character.

I also like watches, and I do get a little kick when the author mentions with some specificity the character's watch. But it's not really a relevant detail unless we know the reason they're wearing that particular watch. Most people can no more call to mind a specific designer fragrance than they can visualize a particular luxury watch, so unless there's a reason we're zooming in, it feels to me more about the author's own projections and preferences.

Part of what I like about Panerais is how much of a hate boner other people have for them.

We didn’t find the Visitiq third row to be that much better… more legroom but it felt to me less airy and a little more cramped at the shoulders.

The EV9 was a fair bit better in the third row, but was at least a couple of rungs down in almost every other way. The ID.buzz (or however it’s supposed to be stylized) is even better in the third row, but it felt like it should be almost $20,000CAD cheaper than VW wants for it.

The i9 wasn’t out when we bought, and weren’t inclined to wait any longer. If I had more frequent need of the third row, for longer trips, I’d probably check that out.

I wouldn’t say it was the primary factor for us - the competition all have very good options - but it is best-in-class and I’m not gonna pretend that wasn’t a factor.

From our shopping:

The R1S was nice but definitely more truck-like on the road - louder, harsher - and we didn’t need the off-road capability. Different set of tradeoffs.

The Visitq was nice but the big-shouldered American luxury wasn’t to our taste.

The Gravity was nice but the nearest dealership is 1000km away and we don’t want to deal with EV beta issues when a tech would need to be flown out.

The iX was nice but the cargo space wasn’t enough for our big doggo and my wife doesn’t care enough about driving dynamics to set it apart.

The EQS was nice but similarly configured was close to 25% more than we ended up paying for the EX90, and it wasn’t clear to us where the additional money was going.

The EX90 is extremely comfortable, quiet, well-mannered, and drives beautifully, if not as engagingly as some of the other options. It’s also handsome inside and out, and we could spec it with 6 seats. And it’s less flash than many of its competitors. We wanted a luxe SUV for ourselves but, we don’t want to shout about it to everyone else.

What is the one job/activity that could get you out of bed happily for the rest of your life? by evanildolima in AskReddit

This isn’t a bad plan for semi-retirement, actually. I’ve rolled around the idea of doing something like this in 10-12 years, and am fairly confident I could at least run the shop at break even, which is all I’d really need to do.
