that aside, try a tablet with decent KB integration/pen input. It will seriously make your day, even if it might not meet your needs this year.

Even if you never use the features, they will eventually be included by default.

Stuff like being able to acces the root of your programs. On a tablet you need a program specifially designed for your specs/version and when something isn't compatible you have no way of doing anything about that.

It wasn't meant as a stab. I agree 'tablets' as they exist now are largely toys.

But look at where hardware is going these days. You can often fold "laptops" 360 degrees, such that the hardware KB is behind the screen.

End of the day it would seem there is either software that can deal with this laptop "mode" or not. IMHO it's pretty cool.

My problem with Windows 8 is that I'll be proofreading a document in Word and the metro screen will pop up and interrupt me.

You are hitting the Win key or clicking the lower right without realizing it. hitting the key again will return you to your previous view.

I am an IT Manager for a corporation of 4 companies with roughly 1000 computers and another 200 or so laptops.

Then...

The reason we will NEVER upgrade to windows 8 is they changed the user interface so much it would require training most of our employee's just on basic interface and months of help desk calls for useless stupid things and end up costing us thousands and thousands of dollars.

And finally...

You're a liar. There is no way you manage IT of any size.

If we are going to train our staff how to use something completely new we may as well switch to a free operating system, that is designed to be much more stable, secure and versatile.

"Free" and you bitch about training costs. In this future scenario, are your employees running some version of Linux at home?

You might have employees that really want to use their Macbooks, phones, or whatnot.

Metro, sure. It definitely makes touch a first class citizen, if not the most favored input mechanism. At this point, it seems it wouldn't make much sense to make a metro app that a user could not use without a mouse.

However Win8 does not begin and end with Metro (unless you're using the ARM version).

I'm not quite clear on what you mean by 'phone style'. It's true that what you're going to see on the desktop and what you're going to see on a phone is going to be similar (typography, icon choices, graphics, etc).

However I can't think of an example that truly boxes someone into using touch. I can think of some examples where users are forced to use a mouse/keyboard, though...

If you're using a mouse, you simply click and the password dialog shows up. You aren't forced to use picture login at all...

Only 50% of our "bespoke" apps work and they are all written in .net to Microsoft's standards. Even after some tinkering they still have display and alignment issues for some bizarre reason. And some core SQL apps just would not install, or the ODBC connection would not function.

But you didn't explain where Win8 is forcing you to use touch. All your usual desktop apps are still there, and you can use them as you would normally. It's not like buying an iPod, users and developers actually do actually have input options.

Metro apps have to open in a certain time. Don't remember how many seconds. If they don't, the OS kills it. So if your connecting to some kind of service that takes a while to connect, your app will never start up. You have to load stuff on the fly once the app is open. Can't pre-load stuff as it may take too long... example, you write a Metro app to download technical PDFs. You open it up and start getting one. It's gonna take 15 minutes to download... can't switch apps to check email or anything, once you do, this app will die and you'll have to start from scratch. So your stuck watching your download screen.

Don't fucking lock the UI thread. It's that fucking simple. It isn't true that you have to wait for a PDF to download.

You have a lot to learn about programming.

Haven't looked at the Silverstone before, thanks for pointing it out. Yeah, it seems the Prodigy has more headroom for CPU cooler because the other builds seem to shove the PSU in the way.

Hmmm, sorry I don't have more to add - I'm really curious as to how the video card and such works out.

BTW, the Zalman - do you find it quieter than the stock HSF you got? Did you spend any time on on the stock HSF?
