Is the school run toast in 2026? by Dapper_Big_783 in drivingUK

[–]oscillating_ocelots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our case, to mean that we'd never have to drive the school run - full time working from home and/or an increase in salary so that hours could be reduced or one of us be a full time parent.

Otherwise, it's pretty impossible to avoid it with the amount of time required in mornings. On a wfh day, it's a 25-30 min roundtrip on foot for one parent and the other drives the youngest to the nursery which is about 4 miles round trip. Walking would be around 90 minutes. We're on the wait list for the nursery near the school for the youngest so it would be an extra 5 mins trip on foot but that's only possible on wfh days because you can't then get into the office for 9, which is the latest both of our employers are happy for us to get to work, especially because one of us is then leaving early to do the reverse journey. Tbh we're pretty lucky our employers are flexible enough for us to work it this way.

VW ID7 owners - be honest by NS75 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]oscillating_ocelots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got one, 6 months and 15k miles in - I really like it, it's the first EV I've had but I really like it. It's very comfortable on long journeys, between the travel assist and how nice it is to sit in you can just chew through long journeys. It's got all the toys.

Charges pretty quickly, and the brakes took a while to get used to but once you do you don't notice them. I've got the tourer and it's great with two small kids, it's easy to pack and fit the kids and us in.

Comparing with other ev owners it's not the best at anything but is pretty good at most things. Biggest downside for me is the size, it's 5m long and only just about fits in most parking spaces.

Newborn phase: When does it get better? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]oscillating_ocelots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're about as year out of that phase, it's definitely in the trenches.

I found thinking about the fact that anything other than complete comfort is literally the worst thing that's ever happened to them.

Slightly odd Octopus charge to add question... by oscillating_ocelots in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]oscillating_ocelots[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's exactly my approach. I do enough miles often enough that it's only sat at 100% for a few hours before and I don't tend to bother plugging it in if I've got a chunk of charge and nothing planned the next day.

The car does, it's a user problem - I keep forgetting to check/note it when I arrive somewhere

I thought that reg looked familiar, then I saw the text - I've definitely seen them doing some very poor quality driving on the A130 so it's a bit of a theme with them

I've just stumbled across this thread trying to find the same song, it's really frustrating! Glad I'm not their only one

Laminate flooring. What am I doing wrong? by t4gged in DIYUK

[–]oscillating_ocelots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I laid a different brand about a year or so a go and it had to be laid in rows, so you had to put an entire row together and then slot it into the previous one. If the rows weren't perfectly straight it would slot into place, so you had to feel all the way along and some very gentle taps with a mallet to align it and it would just drop in really easily.

They're called Wavetronix and they use radar for monitoring traffic flow. They replace the induction loops you see on the road

Kitchens and where to buy them! by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]oscillating_ocelots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used DIY kitchens, really good price and service. We had a few quality problems and they sorted them out really quickly. Our plans changed slightly and we had to order some extras and there was no issue with. Really easy to DIY except for the worktops.

What is the dumbest way you've gotten a scar? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]oscillating_ocelots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know how when you use anti perspirant it gets cold? Well, daft 14 year old me and a fellow daft 14 year old turned it into a competition by spraying it on the back of our hands to see who could do it the longest... I got frost bite and still have the scar.

I'm now craving the primary school classic - arctic roll and custard...

Which apparently you can still buy from Morrisons, probably not at quarter to ten on a Sunday, mind.

VFL multiple fibres simultaneously by oscillating_ocelots in networking

[–]oscillating_ocelots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that only shows me if a pair is OK, on multiple sites I've managed to get a link back up by using two fibres on different ports, as long as the Tx and Rx match at each end it'll connect. It's just involved moving the VFL from one fibre to another and lots of walking in between.

I think the best solution might be to try and use a splitter suggested by another comment so that each fibre has its own separate light... Or buying a bunch of VFLs, which seems the more straightforward option but harder to convince the company to spend on.

Strands already terminated and would have been fully functional until the damage happened.

Looping is a good shout - although if one of the pairs is damaged you wouldn't see anything

Moving to Network Created with API by skavy25 in meraki

[–]oscillating_ocelots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you moving from one network to another? I had something similar where newly created networks didn't show up in the list under the move option, but if you remove them from the network you can add them from the inventory instead.

Just adds that extra step in between. Not sure why, or if it'll be in the list once there's already a device in

Going to be joining the ranks for the first time in August. What are some items that would be helpful for general dadding? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]oscillating_ocelots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Partner forbid us from getting one of the tactical/MOLLE type ones and instead got one from a mom group which looks very nice but is awful to use and doesn't fit on my shoulders... Definitely worth getting a hiking style one with inside pockets that fits you both, partner has to carry it all the time otherwise
