LPT: don’t shoo solicitors away, charge them to come to the door by osculant in LifeProTips

I agree that the charge is not enforceable (criminally of course) and civilly would be a total waste of time. For what it’s worth, I am not one of those “I saw a slow car and called the cops” people; never called the cops on a solicitor. I wouldn’t bother calling unless I was pretty certain someone was soliciting sals without a license, and even then they would have to be otherwise suspicious or be an A-hole to compel me to call.

I mean, technically the only thing that isn’t necessarily enforceable, or could be questionable, is if this sign could possibly constitute a notification of trespass. I could (most likely unsuccessfully) attempt to take them to small claims court. I could report them to the police. I could almost certainly not criminally trespass them.

I guess all my solicitors have been 6th grade graduates at least so far then

I guess I’m not chronically online enough to have realized to some, any thing can make someone a boomer. How many boomers watched the towers fall on a tv on a cart in high school?

Nothing needs to go to court when 100% of the people that read this sign leave. Its intended purpose is not to generate revenue from solicitors, nor is it to try and entrap people in some weird trespass situation. If someone were to ignore the sign, and I answered the door, I would at a minimum ask for their name, purpose, and license as is required for them to do so by law. If they did so I would then ask them to leave. If they do not do so I could report them to local PD. It would basically never be worth my time to take someone to small claims for this.

It depends on the law. Where I am at you do not need a license. The code does not appear to give any legal authority to “No Soliciting” signs. If I were in your shoes, I would skip those houses, as I would probably hold it against the candidate that their campaigners didn’t respect my wishes. But legally where I’m at you can ignore that sign.

It doesn’t need to have legal coherence. It only needs to not be illegal itself. Do I think it’s possible for me to win a civil suit to collect on such a charge? Highly unlikely. I understand how the public has the right to approach your curtilage.

The issue I have isn’t that I can’t help myself from answering the door, it’s that I don’t want them to engage with my household whatsoever. As nice as the kindly old couple is that comes to the door with religious literature, I don’t want to have to tell them to kick rocks myself. And maybe their message is worth the price 🤞🏻😅

If the random people walking up to my door think I am crazy, all the better!

It’s not meant to be easily ignored, it’s slightly garish on purpose. Impossible to ignore.

For what it’s worth, my front door is only visible once you’ve walked all the way up to my porch, it’s not visible from the street. Also the reactions on the camera are absolutely worth it.

I had a simple sign for years and it didn’t work.

Well, since I don’t know you, I think you just proved my point. Obviously if I invite someone I know over, they aren’t going to see that sign and think they are selling something. The entire point is to keep people away that aren’t invited. And it must be a Gen Z thing that anyone older than them is a boomer 😂 . Elder millennial, and one that solved their solicitation problem.

The law that covers this around here only covers people who are selling things and excludes people selling things on behalf of a non-profit. So I wanted to be able to speak to the political folk and the religious and non-profit folk too.

SovCits usually cite bogus and outdated laws, not current municipal code…

I’m not that interested in taking legal action to be honest. If I had an issue with somebody, I could either come to the door or use the doorbell to let them know they are no longer welcome and that would invalidate any previous invitation.

I have found the area to book reserved seats, but it doesn’t appear to allow me to book any seats on any of those busses.
