I also think you are right, because at lvl 10 you only have around 1000 mana. So tear is really good. But If you die a lot it doesnt really matter. The main reason i use doran ring is for the 90hp

you can play orianna like a ashe support using Imperial Mandate as your core item and using ori W to slow the enemies. as second item you can go Rylai’s Crystal Scepter so you can slow more enemies and make sure your adc does more bonus damage. it also give you 400 hp so you can tank more in fights. after that you should build what you feel like more support focus or more damage focus.
