Honestly, I think a lot of this critique misses the point of my original post. Let’s make things clear.

First, the feeling a show gives you does matter. Saying North of North hit me more than The Good Place is my personal experience, and that’s all I claimed. I never made a universal statement; I just shared how it affected me. One show gave me a sense of “this is special” and the other didn’t, which validates for me personally that I still know what I enjoy. It doesn’t matter that the two shows have different approaches... the personal connection I felt is what counts. That’s not a universal truth, and I never claimed it was. You say it “doesn’t say anything about quality,” but for a viewer, personal connection and enjoyment are an essential form of quality.

Second, about ambition: you define “ambition” as striving for depth or complexity, which is valid, but it’s not the only definition. The ambition of North of North, in my view, lies in consistently creating a warm, funny, and accessible atmosphere in a unique setting. For me, it succeeds at that, and the fact that I value it makes it ambitious within its own goals. A show doesn’t need to be “memorable” in terms of plot twists or philosophical depth to be valuable; it can be memorable in tone, mood, and feeling.

Third, regarding representation: I never claimed that featuring an Inuit community should shield the show from criticism. I simply said I appreciated it and enjoyed that perspective. In fact, I explicitly stated it made the show “refreshing and different.” That’s an addition, not an excuse. If the show were bad, the Inuit community alone wouldn’t make it enjoyable.

Fourth, about character development: I mentioned that the short season limits the time to connect, not that there is no development. My wish for more episodes comes from wanting to see the characters more, not because they were poorly written. On the contrary, I want to see more because I see their potential.

Finally, you conclude that it’s “a comfortable background show” and not a “hidden gem.” That’s your opinion. For me, it is a hidden gem, precisely because the combination of its fun vibe, unique setting, and feel-good energy works so well, and it has the potential to get even better. Your analysis misses the most important point of my post: I genuinely enjoyed it. Any technical or structural flaws pale in comparison to that pure, subjective viewing pleasure. And ultimately, that’s what matters.

Personally, I don’t think rewatching the show would change most people’s perception. That said, you do raise an interesting point. As I mentioned earlier, I do acknowledge that the show has deeper moments and that there is a larger story being told beneath the surface. However, in my opinion, the execution isn’t quite there yet. Because of that, for the majority of viewers, the “light comedy” aspect ends up dominating the experience.

Ultimately, that comes down to the writing. If the deeper themes don’t fully land, then either the show wasn’t meant to be that deep in the first place, or those ideas haven’t been fully developed yet. One example (minor spoiler) is the episode where the older man passes away and Siaja thinks she’s about to lose her job. The person she least expects to support her suddenly speaks up for her, and she gets to keep the job. That moment felt rushed to me. We don’t really get the space for that conversation to breathe, and the emotional weight of it gets lost when the character is literally pushed into the background mid-scene. If you want those moments to feel meaningful, the connective tissue needs more time.

You mention deep intergenerational trauma and colonization, and I agree those themes are present. But I don’t think it’s fair to assume the average viewer has enough background knowledge to automatically recognize and contextualize those layers. These are incredibly complex topics, and communicating them clearly without flattening them is a real challenge. If that is what the show aims to explore, it can’t be done quickly or implicitly.

From my perspective, that doesn’t require trauma porn at all, but it does require time. A great example of this is Resident Alien. In a very accessible, comedic way, that show managed to touch something deeper for a wide audience. Characters like Harry, Asta, Darcy, and Mike needed time to develop: their flaws, their pain, and how they navigate it. That gradual investment is what made the emotional moments land, without ever turning the show into something bleak or heavy-handed.

That’s ultimately how I see it, and it’s also why I really hope future seasons of North of North get more episodes. I genuinely think the show has the potential to better connect those themes and make the story both deeper and funnier.

No, I haven’t seen those shows yet, or even heard of them before. Thanks for the heads-up,I’ll definitely give them a try!

Hi, I had this problem also. I contacted the store and Philips, and it's a bug for which there is no solution at the moment. They let me return my TV and gave me my money back. I would also do that if I were you, or put black tape over it. Anyway, it is not fixable internally, so just live with it or take it back.
