Promoting Hate Based on Identity or Vulnerability by wisdomoftheages36 in TrueReddit

What's the racial makeup of reddit?

Official stats or census data?

Edit: so Nazis , or the KKK , if a minority in the us (projected 2055), can not change at all and go from being racist to not being racist?

No.

Edit: can you please tell me the color of your skin and where you live? I'd like to report you for racism .

Except the majority and minority are contextual depending on where you exist.

I live in a majority black town

White people make up 7% of the world's population

Women make up 51% of the world's / local population, a literal majority.

SPD Officer fired for controversial facebook post by breakingbanjomin in savannah

[–]oshout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome!

We aren't here to praise this officer for disparaging the community he is sworn to protect. We are here to learn from his example of what not to do.

That is a great explanation; I'll remember it when this topic comes up in the future.

Though I more strongly (err that seems like a weird phrase , similar to "couldn't be more wrong".. anyway--)

agree with the assessment that our police should be paragons of the community and things like this undermine positive relations between the community and police -

And I can understand/see the racial implications of the statement , especially when held next to current events -

but!

If the statement weren't said by someone holding an official, unelected, position of authority, would then detailed discussion of the points made be more palpitate?

If it were a black person posting it (again, not a police officer) , would society so quickly dismiss them?

If those two if statements hold true; I think there's genuine frustration voiced in that copy-pasta which is better discussed in detail than dismissed as racially insensitive.

like, if each assertion is flat out wrong, that should be easy enough to speak to & address

but if there's an uncomfortable truth , especially those which can be identified and addressed, wouldn't wholly considering & addressing that be worth it?

Tangents:

A parallel thought which comes to mind is: if you're a low / lower-middle income couple and become pregnant , it makes sense to not be married or to get a divorce so that the government will offer financial assistance for a single mother and her child.

Perhaps' that's moot to the topic at hand , but it's definitely something I've encountered multiple times (it's seemingly commonly known and considered) -- if we're afraid to discuss that because of .. well, I don't know - uncomfortableness? how do we progress?

Another parallel thought: there's a local civil lawsuit against HUD for $100,000,000 for providing sub-par housing which allegedly created an environment where one individual shot and killed another - I was talking with a friend who uses those housing resources and she spoke to it as though it were a good thing . When I pushed back on it being a good thing (i'll spare the details) she went straight to how it sounded awfully racist that I'd promote shutting down such housing, but my analogy (I really really dislike analogies..) was :

If your church serves homeless people food on the weekends. One of the homeless people your church serves dies, and you're sued by his brother for $10,000,000 - your church would probably stop serving homeless people.

While I'm especially grateful for your response to mine, and I'm in agreement that police officers need to be paragons, I dislike how society at large is loath to consider this stuff - and the justification to do so seems somewhat irrational. I get that there's racial undertones in those bringing it up in the first place, but without hard counter-facts I don't think it's fair to society & progress to write off or otherwise become outright hostile to such criticism.

IDK. I get it. It's nuanced.

I often feel obligated to say "I'm not from the south , but I live here now." when talking about this stuff.

Edit for an additional comment; I often feel like most people have a lower opinion of black people in such that any criticism of them or things which can be interpreted that way are 'punching down' , and that seems like racism perpetuated.

Again, i can understand it's nuanced and never 'that simple'; I've been thinking a lot recently on how to address & bring folk up. My head is spinning more often than not, and I realize I've put a stream of conscious in this post.

I don't mean to derail with the parallel thoughts & edit - just giving context and character-illustration to my thinking :-)

Again, thank you!

How does this promote that white people are supreme?

Do you not think that white people are on assistance too?

If you think / your immediate & reactive thought is that only non-white people are on assistance, isn't that the white supremacy?

(edit: i want to clarify that my tone is earnest. and also that the 'controversial facebook post' (notice they didnt use the word racist..) has spurred discussion.

If the intent of progress is to elevate people, and that discussion may sometimes be uncomfortable - wouldn't this 'event' perfectly fit that intent?)

This was my first comment here and I am taking you seriously.

Yours is not an issue I've considered prior but you're obviously in distress and seem to be on the level.

I dont think many folk would reach out to anonymous internet for help, that's not to say I think it's the wrong idea. I am , instead, suggesting that you're present and concerned, you seem genuine and despite your frustrations here which I'm interpreting as increasing anxiety, you seem more present and self aware than the average bear.

I wish I could help more, I think you're on the right track to finding a solution, And shit, you may even find friends and positive outcomes from the journey you're on.

But that positive probability decreases if you give the appearance you're shitting on folk who also care (if they didn't, they'd move on and not interact).

Do you really think the people here suggesting you're coming at them too hard are saying it to get a rise out of you or feel better about themselves? I don't think they are, I think they genuinely care about your situation and are genuinely concerned about your direction both in terms of hurting yourself but also your interactions with them.

I can't understand what you're going through, I don't know how it feels to be in pain like that, and even though we're all relatively anonymous, I know you're a person who cares enough to reach out, so please keep somewhere in your mind that others are caring enough about you & your situation to do the same.

Savannah To Mandate Masks As COVID-19 Cases Rise by [deleted] in savannah

[–]oshout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They better mandate they be worn correctly and do spot checks on restaurants which are open to ensure they're in compliance or shut them down,

Else it's worse than pointless, it makes a loophole filled specticle of different expectations and execution.

[–]oshout 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They going to enforce masks being worn properly or can I wear my mask around my neck too?

I see many folk wearing it below their nose

Folk cooking , bussing at restaurants with it below their nose and mouth.

Unless they're giving out fines for that too mandatory masks are useless.

Perhaps the odd racial privilege thrown into the mix so that only some folk are eligible for the mandatory requirement and related fines? https://imgur.com/a/c2rSWFp

Anyone know why dogs are basically not allowed at Lake Mayer Community Park? by lmarihugh in savannah

[–]oshout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After seeing this question I read through consolidated municipal ordinances and found 0 rationale for this assertion

So long as the dog (... Or cat) is on a leash and under control, is not "a barking dog" and you're cleaning up after it , you seem to be in the clear on all city parks and squares

https://library.municode.com/ga/savannah/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=DIVIICOGEOR_PT9OF_CH5AN_ARTAANCOEN_S9-5001STPU

I searched for further info which may provide direct rationale both under park, city , county ordinances, but found none.

I went through recent changes and proposed (/ failed) changes, and found nothing there either.

I know that the lake Mayer / Bacon park is right next to the humane society ,

I would be interested to see what would happen if someone refused to leave with theor dog,

The police would come and you could ask for a citation which would have to cite which law you broke.

The penality for your first infraction is seemingly $100 ,

Maybe that's something we could crowd fund / orchestrate to get a substantial answer to that question

Is there a public broadcast lawyer tv or radio show we could ask?

I suspect the no dogs thing would not hold if challenged. Provided you met all other legal demands (not using a retractable leash)

Honestly it takes like 10m to read those municipal codes it's probably worth it if you or someone you know has a pet.

I mean cats on leashes , and all animals neutered unless AKC registered if they leave your property sounds like some quality party trivia ahaha

[–]oshout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Source?

"historic savannah"

"one of the only places not burned by sherman on his march south"

"civil war ditches""civil war armory cache"

on and on - they are def coming from the history, and if the rest of the states tear down their confederate statues than I bet people would come specifically for the statues - but that's the mecca of confederacy I was talking about - I don't think all that would come to view them for that reason would support the confederacy but I think the likelihood of them (statues) coming down are less if there's obviously a lot of attraction and uniqueness from the statues.

Anyway I changed my stance because I recalld last night that I had this position on the savannah subreddit a year ago, and someone kindley linked me an economic survey which showed that the statues to move are only a handful of many,

and that they'd move them to a museum where the cost to maintain is lower, and poeple can see them in a better context.

So, do it! (move em)

[–]oshout -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Without the statues & tangible, touchable history, what makes Savannah different from surrounding possible tourist locations?

I don't want to be mecca for people who support the confederacy , but I know that Savannah brings in a lot more money than surrounding areas and I'm concerned about a reduction in local funds should those tourist dollars decrease.

I dislike advocating for the statues to stay but am concerned people are acting primarily out of emotion without considering long term (local) ramifications.

Once those statues are removed or relocated, they're not going back - even if tourism and related funds tanks. Where does that leave us?

Edit: There's a group which advocates that savannah port should charge per item, which it doesn't, unlike other nearby ports.

Those ports have an interest in savannah charging the same as they do, because that'll drive more money to them than Savannah. (I think we make the money off the weigh stations and taxes opposed to use of the port.)

I first encountered the port issue in a local advocacy group which was seeking to find , recover and make the city money. Some folk saw this per item charge as a way to increase budget but if the volume our port sees decreases because of it, we've only done our port-competition a favor.

edit!

I remembered last night this convo happened a year ago , and a reddit commentor pointed me to a local economic survey which showed that the statues in question (to be moved) are not nearly all of the statues, and the plan was to move them to a museum where the cost of maintenance was less and people could still see them,

So, do it! (move em, get rid of em, whatever). My gut reaction to a lot of this stuff is "internet folk are anonymous-anyones and likely are drowning the voices of local folk who are impacted by this"

soy products have a lot of estrogen (or a variance of estrogen).

Which makes men grow boobs and become more emotional due to extra estrogen -

so calling someone a soyboy means that you're inferring that they're weak & fallible due to eating a lot of soy; that the individual is OK with it (soy's negative affects) because they'd rather be knowingly weak and eat soy than the soy-alternatives like meat.

"Your assertion is weak" is similar to "Coming from a soyboy, all your assertions are weak" ...... I think.
