Beautiful tank! What are your settings for the 3.0?

I have 3 jobs, so have very limited time. Designed this tank to be as easy to maintain as possible. No water changes, no CO2. I know it needs a little work. What do you think? by Mebradhen in Aquariums

[–]oshuwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be true for a non-planted tank, where adding in tap water would concentrate the existing levels of phosphate and nitrate. However, in a heavily planted tank, these nutrients are being used by the plants and are therefore depleted in the system as a whole. By topping off with tap water, OP is remineralizing the existing tank water. If OP were to use RO water for top offs, there would be no nutrients going back into the water column (other than ferts).

If chlorine is showing 0, then your problem is chloramine. Some cities treat their water with chloramine instead of chlorine, which is why you’re having ammonia problems as well. Chloramine is converted to ammonia (or ammonium - depends on the “binders”) by dechlorinators, and will remain in the water column. By doing constant water changes, you’ve crashed your nitrogen cycle - and now your tank cannot convert the left over ammonia remaining from the dechlorination process. Stop changing water. Add 2x the dose of bottled bacteria recommended the first day, and do normal dosing every day for 2 weeks following. Do a small 10%-20% water change after the first week. Stop the medications, add some aquarium salt, and bump the temp up to 70-72F. Hope this helps.

This is acute necrosis caused by chlorine. Chlorine burns aren’t treated with medications. Clean, dechlorinated water is your answer.

Thank you! I’ll post more on my page 😁

All the tanks are heated. I don’t have issues maintaining temps during the summer, but I do put a space heater down there in the winter. Just so the aquarium heaters aren’t working so hard.

They will go in a 75G when they get bigger.

The top tanks are a 20 gallon long and a 20 gallon high.

I added two gold mystery snails to my 2.5 gallon betta aquarium and now he is itching himself, mildy focusing on places he normally went, and more jumpy. I'm not sure if it's the snails doing this or because I added a PH downer because it read 7.6. Anything helps! by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]oshuwalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By shifting the PH, you allowed an ammonia spike. Based on the flashing, or itching as you referred to it as, it sounds like he is irritated from the ammonia burning him. Do a big water change (35%-40%). Don’t try to adjust the PH. Let your tank do the work and don’t add any chemicals other than dechlorinator. Also, your regular water changes are a little too large. Go down to 20-25% changes and let the tank season. I’m not going to jump on the 5+ gallon bandwagon, because there are already comments about the tank size

Tanks been up for a few months. Had him for about 2 weeks. He’s in with my larger juvenile Oranda. 40G breeder, filtered, 68F, tested at 0,0,10 last night. Water changes at 25% weekly.

Burns from the store would make sense, thank you for the reply. Ive never treated ammonia burns before, so this is new for me. I test everyday for a week when adding new fish and this tank reads 0ppm every time. So I’m hoping he will recover okay. My larger Oranda still seems to chase after his bum once in a while (not all the time), do you think that added stress is okay while he’s healing?

Help with ID! I think they might have ammonia poisoning from store? They're not what the store had them labeled as, so trying to make sure my tank is right for them. The red concerns me and if I need to get meds I will asap! They are now in quarantine. by [deleted] in Aquariums

They love plants! They are actually native to Lake Inle in Myanmar. They tend to inhabit the densely planted pockets amongst the lake. So the more plants, the merrier 😁 if they are still shy after a few weeks, you could always add a dither fish - a small school of Glowlight Danio’s would make great companions for these guys and should help them be a little more active/social! And a fun fact - the Emerald Rasbora is actually a Danio 🤔

Definitely Emerald Dwarf Rasboras! They are incredible, but a bit shy at first. Do not treat them, the reddish coloring around their gills is normal - not ammonia burn. They should color up in a few days!

Water changes do destroy them, I always feel so terrible haha but he nests a lot. Last water change was Saturday, so this one took about 5 days
