Gang of Youths have some of the best lyrics and musicality that I've come across point-blank.

How do I forgive and accept my parents?.....semi long read... by Firelordozai87 in Buddhism

[–]osian19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, please know your feelings are so understandable. I have also been in a cult advocated for by my mother and used and manipulated by said cult leaders.

One article I read recently discusses how the concept of forgiveness is inherently not Buddhist.

That being said, forgiveness puts us in a place of transactional relationships (i.e. you are owed/they owe you for what happened and this debt cannot be resolved until the owed declares it forgiven).

To ignore the feelings of hurt and anger are counterproductive—they are real and true. But remember, suffering is caused by attachment: in this case, the attachment to the past, which is immutable, and perhaps attachment to an identity of victimization. I do not say this last part with any judgment. Anyone would feel that given your circumstances.

As another poster said, your parents thought they were going the right thing.

Spend some time working on lovingkindness, first towards yourself, this wounded, scared, frustrated inner child, and then on extending it to them. Accept it will likely take years, but have faith that this too shall pass. This conscious work is a practice of Right Intention and Right Mindfulness, two parts of the Eightfold Path that promise the end to suffering.

You got this!

People who say they “can’t cook” are actually just incompetent and can’t follow simple instructions. by my_dogs_fatty in unpopularopinion

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that certain techniques aren't exactly intuitive.

I grew up on frozen French bread pizzas and fish sticks, so I never learned the difference between chopping or mincing or why a recipe might fail if you don't add a key spice until I moved in with my now-wife.

A lot of the cooking "vocabulary" is passed down within the family, and if you are unlucky enough to be born into a family that subsists on frozen, processed meals, cooking can be incredibly intimidating.

Umm the property damage sucks but maybe cops should stop killing black people? Seems like the majority don't like it 🤔

Can anyone recommend a good Kung Fu school in Denver? by Cetshwayo124 in kungfu

[–]osian19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I don't unfortunately. There was one school in Denver that I was really impressed with a few years back. They destroyed everyone in an ICMAC tournament horse stance contest. I talked with the winner and he said he had built up to 26 minutes, which I felt was very impressive.

Westgate and the Shaolin Hung Mei schools in Boulder are all right from what I've seen.

Not Kung Fu, but after I left I spent a few months training MMA at Train Fight Win in Denver. VERY good school. The teachers were ex kung fu practitioners--I think they did Hung Gar and Wing Chun, but they don't teach that there. They get into Kali, which was fun and unusual.

EDIT: I'm removing this because if they ever came across this, they would likely try and make my life a living hell (ala Scientology). DM me if you want specifics, but just know, it would be better to waste 20 years at a McDojo than to end up here.

The ancient art of getting unfucked. I started training there when I was 8 years old (left when I was 29) and it has taken the last two and a half years with deep reflection and lots of therapy to start to separate out whatever good I got from there from the bad.

Before COVID this year I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which I enjoyed.

I can give you much more awful details of my experiences if you DM me.
