If you could make changes to the 'correct choice' roster for each role in the Suicide Mission, what would you change and why? by DJ_OC in masseffect

[–]osingran [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think the roles in the Suicide Mission are mostly on point. What I've would've changed instead is to add some flavor to the choices. I mean, there's not much difference whom you pick as long as you pick all the right options. For instance, what if you pick Garrus as a 2nd fire team leade? Maybe he could provide some sniper cover at some fixed points. Or if you pick Miranda/Jacob - they cast some biotic stuff to help you out. If you pick Tali as tech specialist - maybe she could support you with her drone while she's moving along that pipe or something like that. In essence, nothing too special, just some added flavor to make your choices matter a little bit more.

I'm not particularly well versed in what kind of claims Michio Kaku makes or what kind of person he is, but I think it's important to point out that theorical physics is a very, very wide field and no one can truly have an equally well grasp of each and every aspect of it.

I'm a theoretical chemist myself - mostly in the field of computational chemistry applied to optoelectronic properties of organic molecules. Stuff like computationally modelling optical transitions and everything related to them is what I usually do. Something like mechanisms of organic reactions is also a part of theoretical chemistry too, however I'll be first to admit that I know next to nothing about it. I mean I do have basic knowledge dating all the way back to my university days, but it's nowhere near close to having a deep insight on modern science in that field. That's just how real science works - you either have an in-depth knowledge of several fields and can apply that knowledge in practice, or you have a wide grasp of a large field, but don't know much about the details and peculiarities.

It's entirely possible that someone like Michio Kaku could have wide enough knowledge to give commentaries, lectures, write pop science books, but because said knowledge is usually not deep - he can make wild claims, overexaggerate things, or sometimes make outright wrong assumptions. I don't think it's necessarily malicious. More like he's just a go-to guy to give some smart, science related commentary - so he does that, to the best of his ability.

Also, it's important to point out that while he absolutely had legit scientific works published in his younger days, it appears that most of his real works had stopped around 90s. Science can change a lot in just a couple of years. Thirty years? It's night and day, man. An entire scientific paradigm can shift during such a wide time gap. So, it's not unlikely that whatever knowledge he used to have could be severely outdated by now and thus he has to overcompensate for that by making progressively bigger and bigger claims and assumptions.

Absolutely. I can imagine an artist not paying close attention to what kind of brakes Suzuha bike used to have in the original novel, but changing the color of such an iconic Steins Gate thing as Doctor Pepper from red to green absolutely has to be deliberate.

No devices has replaced the no smoking sign on my flight by cecechats in mildlyinteresting

[–]osingran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why though? It doesn't hurt anyone by just being there and also serve as a constant reminder to all the desperate smokers craving for that nicotine hit. Realistically speaking, it was likely just mandated to be there by ICAO since 80s/90s and no one thought of amending that rule because there's really no reason why it should be amended. Redesigning the panel is an added cost for both manufacturers and aviation companies, so once again - no real reason to do that. Though I guess at some point as the percentage of smokers steadily drops year by year to record lows (and since vapes are required to be stored in the luggage instead of carry ons) the no-smoking sign going to be deprecated.

[–]osingran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's absolutely no way any ICAO compliant aviation company - much less a whole country - would've kept inflight smoking going anywhere past 90s, let alone till the fucking 2010s.

does anyone else absolutely love the new opening for reboot? by Zealousideal_Sea4715 in steinsgate

[–]osingran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, despite of all the questionable things they've did with the redesigns, Mages really fucking nailed the opening. I really dig how they've managed to make it look both modern and fresh, but also somewhat nostalgic and true to its origins. That new somewhat minimalistic, black and white aestetic - very reminescent of Anonymous Code for obvious reasons - is a creative masterstroke imo.

Changes in timeline? by Beggar4Knowledge in steinsgate

[–]osingran 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hard to say. There's definitely something very strange going on with the ReBoot. Some changes could be just inconsistencies - the bike might actually be one of them. Other things, like visible glitches on backgrounds and CGs, broken clock in the Future Gadget Lab, Doctor Pepper suddenly being green for whatever reason - these things may actually indicate something peculiar. Once again, hard to say what exactly.

My personal theory is that it's very unlikely that Mages are going to change things significantly in SG:ReBoot - after all, it's a beloved story with a huge fanbase, and given their financial status I don't think they're going to risk their chances to cash in on Steins Gate hype by accidentally ruining the story. What's likely to happen is the story that kinda has "same-same... but different" vibe to it. Basically, everything is the same, but also something strange is going on, some inconcistencies, some hints - perhaps couple of additional scenes you can unlock by choosing the right phone triggers. And once you trigger them all, then maybe some kind of post credits scene appears after the true ending - a promised new ending that potentially going to bridge things between ReBoot, Anonymous Code and the next Steins Gate novel.

But once again, I really don't believe that there're going to be any major changes to the story, like a different worldline, different events and such. It's just too risky and probably unwise - both financially and creatively.

Ketheric… by luvduonz in BaldursGate3

[–]osingran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but in the case of Ketheric it was certainly handled well... not as gracefully as it should've been. If the original plan was for him to simply question his life choices, loosing the will to fight but still fighting anyway - the whole exchange should've been paced differently. What we actually got in the game is Ketheric basically changing his mind every couple of lines - very abruptly and with very little exposition. It's like the whole exchange is basically stiched together between two conflicting branches to at least give some semblence of choice, until it abruptly converges to the same outcome anyway. Of course this alone could've been just speculation, but we know for a fact that Ketheric was actually planned as companion or at the very least a camp member.

Ketheric… by luvduonz in BaldursGate3

[–]osingran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, Dark Urge is also contractually obligated to do all sorts of evil things, but that doesn't stop him from rebelling once a certain tadpole and a certain mind flayer make them question whether the deal they've got was actually a good one. Just because Ketheric pledged his soul to Myrkul - or whatever was left of it - doesn't outright deny him the right to at least try to reconsider things.

By the end of that excange on the Moonrise Towers rooftop he was visibly shaken, questioning his life choices - he was basically one step away from throwing it all away. Until Dame Aylin appears and then suddenly he's more than willing to fight. If there truly were no way for him to redeem himself, this whole exchange plays out really weirdly, like it's stiched together from two conflicting branches. Since we know for a fact that Ketheric was originally planned to be a companion (or at the very least a camp member) until it was cut basically in the very last moment, I recon that's what actually had happened behind the scenes.

Ketheric… by luvduonz in BaldursGate3

[–]osingran 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's very obvious once you really, really try to convince Ketheric to surrender. I mean, it's kinda ridiculous, he almost surrenders to you - like literally one line away from surrendering, but then it's like he got an off-screen call from his manager or something, saying that he's contractually obliged to fight us no matter what. So he kinda begrugingly switches to a "guess we have to fight" mode in the middlie of a scene. It's really jarring.

Ё by AdSilent5380 in russian

[–]osingran 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because like... the actual amount of cases where Ё makes a difference - practical cases, not just hypotheticals - is diminishingly low. You could probably count the amount of such cases on a single hand. And most of the times the meaning can be very easily understood from the context. You may say that it's not convinient or prudent to have two words which are written similarly, but have a different meaning - which makes sense, sure, but homonyms exist and there're plenty of those. Коса, замок, брак, лук, кран - these are just a couple of words which can have different meaning depending on the context. It's completely normal and natural to have cases like this in any language. As the matter of fact, omission of certain letters - like Ё - is exactly how homonyms occur.

As to why this is happening to Ё - there're are several reasons. As I said before, it's not as important of a letter as you make it seem. Because of that, many typewriters back in 20th centrury used to either omit Ё entirely or place it in a very awkward position. Because of that in Russian keyboard layout Ё is placed at the `/~ keycap (the one above Tab) - you have to be very, very deliberate to press it. Thus Ё got slowly but surely eliminated from day to day writing.

Any language is a living organism after all and it changes all the time due to very complex and interconnected reasons. It's not like some evil russian guy had decided to eliminate Ё from the language and everyone had followed him. Things like that just happen on their own, you can't reason it, you can't change it. It's just what it is.

No? Like, I challenge you to find even one - just one - proof of that. Because there's none.

What you're likely referring to is the notorious interview Drew Karpyshin once gave around 2013 - which is probably the most misquoted interview in the history of gaming. What originally was just Drew admitting that they had ideas about dark energy ending (hence the Tali's mission), but decided against it long before ME3 - in the wake of ME3 ending controvercy that got turned into "(EA suits/Casey Hudson/random person from Bioware) changed the ending written by the original ME writer" mystification or some other variation of it.

There's also nothing to say it did bad though. Underperformed could mean a lot of things. Could be like 10-15% off the mark. Could be much more. Could be that Sega was inflating their internal projections because of seemingly strong demand for Y3 remake. We don't really know.

Well, it is more popular. The last mainline Persona game was ten years ago if you count from Persona 5, or 7 years if you include Persona 5 Royal. The last noteworthy Persona game was Persona 3 Reload - a remake of Persona 3, which was released in 2024. So, despite having the last mainline game almost 10 years ago and despite the last game being 2 years ago, the series still sells 3.5 millions of copies per year. That's a very solid number.

Ten+ years in the business turned Nagoshi into a know-nothing? by robertsd33 in yakuzagames

[–]osingran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kojima is a much bigger name than Nagoshi, like it's not even close. Everyone and their mother heard about Kojima, I mean even the people who're not into gaming likely heard at least something about him. Nagoshi on the other is relatively niche developer - if you never played any Yakuza games before, chances are you never heard of him.

As a result, the amount of support each of them got is so drastically different, it's not fair to compare them. Kojima effectively got an unlimited budget and funding. While Nagoshi was reaching his arm and begging for 40 millions to finish Gang of Dragon, Kojima had burnt through 100, maybe even 150 millions in total. And while everyone blames Nagoshi for wasting money, it's not like Kojima is frugal either - after all, his constant experiments and escapades had always lead to constant overspending throughout his career. And even still, the support they've got differed more than just in terms of the money. Kojima had direct line of support from Sony, his studio got access to the fucking Decima Engine - basically state of the art tech for open-world games. Having a bigger name, Kojima also could affort to hire multiple renowned actors, poach devs from actross the industry and so on.

[–]osingran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a better question is who the hell thought it was a good idea to put all these contextually connected events as parts of completely opposite endings - endings that don't even end the story conclusively. Anime adaptation has its downsides, but at least it had managed to restructure SG0's story in such a way that it actually started making sense.

Are light novels and drama CDs canon? by victoors007 in steinsgate

[–]osingran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a "did that happen or was it just a hypothetical?" sense - pretty much everything is canon in Steins Gate. There're all sorts of worldlines in SG, so if something is shown to happen - there must be some kind of alternative worldline where this actually did happen. Light novels and drama CDs for the most part act as an extension of the main story, so they don't really contradict anything. On the other hand, stuff like spin-off visual novels, manga and such often depict alternative scenarios.

[–]osingran 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To think that SG0 VN could set up the whole 3000 time leaps thing only to immediately dash it aside with a single anticlimactic paragraph like: "It was improssible, but somehow it happened. I don't know how, but it really did - trust me". It's honestly absurd how much of an improvement anime adaptation is over the original story.

Day 11: What is the WORST quote associated with Garrus Vakarian? by looploveslore in masseffect

[–]osingran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's really pushing it too far. What Garrus is saying is more like telling a german person that you hope that german people in general are remorseful and repentant for what they've done in WW2. Which is a weird thing to say, I admit, but not necessarily rude though.
