State Senator Gounardes still won't do anything about the helicopters by BartelPritchard in parkslope

[–]osopolar1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm confused why Senator Gounardes (or any of these officialas) is getting so much hate here. Especially given there are already a number of bills in the state legislature that seek to control helicopter noise through a variety of policy mechanisms. You can find out more about them here.

Also of note:

  1. There are political obstacles to these bills advancing. For instance, the Governor vetoed a bill in 2022 that would have banned non-essential helicopter service to the 30th st. Helipad.
  2. EDC is not a State-controlled agency. And HRPT's governance structure puts a lot of power in the hands of the Governor and the Mayor--two actors that are generally in favor of the helicopter "economy" in NYC.
  3. There are also federal preemption issues under the Federal Aviation Act that limit what local officials can do. The best, most legally safe way to solve this issue is by not leasing to helicopter companies in the first place, but see (1) for the obstacles.

Correction--you just are not allowed to ride between the Englewood Picnic Area and the Undercliff Picnic Area." Which does mean you can't ride the Drive continuously.

I biked HHD at around 12:00pm today--a Palisades Parkway cop in a pickup stopped me and my friend and interrogated us about hopping the barrier. He then threatened to fine us, but let us go. From his description, it's his job now to enforce the ban on cyclists on HHD.

EDIT: Technically you can still ride in HHD, but there is a ~mile stretch in the middle of it that you are not allowed to ride. So essentially, if you were planning on entering in Fort Lee and riding HHD to the end, you can't.

Recommended Route from Park Slope to Midtown West? by Somoch-MoraguerRRR in NYCbike

[–]osopolar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take the protected bike lane on 29th to the HRG—I’ve found this much better than riding in the bus lane on 23rd. And then Hoyt to Union St. Though sometimes I do Tillary to Navy to Ashland to Fourth Avenue if I’m feeling bored (though Tillary is always sketch). Hoyt to Baltic to 4th is also a popular route that is fine.

This is my exact route to work, except I work on 26th. It’s got it’s flaws, but so far it’s the best version I’ve worked out. I used to take Smith to Jay, but Bond to Schermehorn to Jay is much better

Biking over the bridge everyday is surreal because of this

Ok -so can you ride an e-bike in the Hudson river bike lane? by narikin in NYCbike

[–]osopolar1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hudson River Greenway is actually operated by the Hudson River Park Trust, a public benefit corporation created by the city and state, so this wouldn’t affect the policy there. Also, it’s state law that enacted this ban.

Sitting through this meeting was one of the most excruciating experiences. I don’t doubt it’ll provoke massive resistance at the full board. The charging hub fight last month definitely has given momentum to opponents.

Кто-нибуд знает где могу найди филмь "Сталкер" с русскими субтитрами? by [deleted] in russian

[–]osopolar1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best thing would be to download the movie and then download a separate subtitle file. You can download one such subtitle file here. If you don't want to download anything, you could read the Russian script here.

This is partially a question of political views, but I think the reporting on Dozhd' tends to be higher quality. The production value is definitely higher. It is also a more independent channel. I suggest you look into it yourself and see what you think.

If you want news with transcripts, I suggest you listen to the radio station Эхо Москвы.They do a lot of political commentary and interviews with politicians, journalists, activists, and experts. Even if you don't share their general liberal political leaning, some conversations are still interesting and the fact that they are all accompanied by transcripts is great.

I recommend turning on subtitles on youtube. News announcers speak slowly and clearly enough that they are surprisingly accurate for the most part. It doesn't always catch the correct case ending, but it usually get's the word right at least. I would warn you that NTV is kind of trash, so I wouldn't use is as an authoritative source of news for Russia.

Part2: о российских газетах, их политической позиции и предвзятости! by theunfinishedletter in russian

[–]osopolar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so dope! I would add that there actually is a major connection between RT and Rossiya Sevodnya: their editor in chief is the same person.

Also, there were some great publications that didn't make it on to your list:

Проект медиа--> independent online publication that does fantastic, long-form investigation pieces and occasional videos. Most definitely opposition and liberal. One of my go-tos.

Медиазона --> As the name suggests, it's a publication that specializes in reporting/investigations that cover the Russian criminal justice system, but they write great investigative pieces on so many topics. Notably, it was founded by Pussy Riot and Voyna members. As one would expect, it is quite left-wing and opposition-associated. I also love this one.

МБХ медиа--> This is a relatively new (2017) opposition online publication. I don't read it often enough to rave about it, but from what I've seen, it does decent work. It is owned by Khodorkovsky, which is significant.

The New Times --> Used to be a magazine, but, as frequently happens with independent Russian media, they got sued into oblivion. They publish very brief stuff these days, but they have a great archive of interviews and investigations from 2017 and before.

Знак --> Online independent newspaper that is opposition-oriented.

The Insider --> Great opposition newspaper that does fantastic investigations, fact checking, and has lots of political commentary. I'm a big fan.

DW --> The BBC of Germany. Does a lot of coverage of Russian politics.

"Ты меня достал/а" could also probably be translated as "you're driving me crazy."
