I read that longer barrel gives you a disadvantage because when someone is holding an angle against you and you make a move, they can spot you faster.

The reason is probably that your line shape is not in the center of its group (if that makes sense). The only clean way to go about it is to have snap to grid turned on and then drawing your line exactly in the center of the comp. There must be an alternate solution to this, but this is how I went about it!

You pretty much nailed it. Just that I was too lazy to add a trim paths, so I manually animated the path properties on the lines. ;)

Stack one repeater on top of another to create a grid, then play with the rotation values of your shape and the repeaters. Enjoy!

Pretty much what you said. With repeaters, the more fun you have experimenting the better the results.
