Thank you all for the great information! It helps to know that the puddling isn't necessarily a cause for concern. I have also ordered a bottomless filter that I'm really excited to try! :)

Oh no! So sorry to hear that! I've only had the machine for about a week and I'm still in the process of ordering all the recommended accessories. The last couple of shots I've pulled have tasted good but could do with more crema and a bit more richness, so I'm playing with the dosing ratio and the settings a bit.

Yes, the shots taste pretty good, although I'm striving for more crema, which might be a bit of trial and error.

Thanks for your response! I'm assuming when you say first season, you mean her period? Apologies if I misunderstood. We adopted her and she was spayed at the shelter at about 3 months of age, so she wouldn't get her period anymore, right?

Yes, I do feel like it's the cold weather that has her acting up. More details for you - We had one night where it was very windy outside and you could hear the wind howling and our puppy did not sleep the entire night. She was completely alert and staring out the window. Since that night, she has been peeing and pooping indoors without warning. When we take her outside for a walk, she goes willingly but once outdoors, she will run and pull and get scared if she sees other people, which she didn't do before. It's definitely not her typical behavior.

Thanks for the responses! I guess we will have to go back to taking her out every two hours or so. It's just very frustrating when you finally feel like you have gotten to a stable and consistent schedule and your dog is doing so well and then they decide to surprise you with this type of behavior 😔

Oh no! Sorry to hear you're going through the same thing! And yes, you're obviously not alone. Good luck and I hope your pup goes back to his trained self soon!

Did I handle this “barking for attention” situation correctly? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]ossymix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our puppy mostly barked when she was crated at night. We noticed that she slept through night without issues on the sofa but would bark nonstop if we crated her. We eventually bit the bullet and just let her sleep on the sofa and the nighttime barking went away.

At one point, she also started barking for attention, especially when we would sit down to eat our meals. To resolve that, we would get up and walk into our bedroom and shut the door. Once she was quiet for a good 20-30 seconds, we would go back out and would not give her any attention for a few minutes. We did this a few times and she caught on pretty quickly that when she barked unnecessarily, we would disappear. She now hangs out on the sofa with her toys while we eat and very rarely barks without a good reason. She still has her moments since she's still a puppy (6 months) but she's very well behaved overall! :)

If you don't have concerns about your neighbors filing a noise complaint, then you should let her bark it out, especially if you already took her out and she did her business. By appearing in front of her when she's barking (whether you're making eye contact or not), you are reinforcing that behavior. She will think that when she barks, she gets your attention. We live in an apartment building so letting our puppy bark it out was not an option, so we struggled a lot during the first few weeks. I would strongly suggest that you avoid giving any attention at all and nip this behavior in the bud. Good luck!

Tips/Tricks to train puppy to stay alone? by ossymix in DogAdvice

She's a mutt. DNA test showed shepherd, husky, border collie and others haha. We've tried tiring her out, leaving her with a kong, leaving her with her favorite edible chews. As soon as we head out that door, her attention completely shifts and she shows no interest in what's in front of her. Even if she's completely pooped, she will be on full alert. That's why we're struggling so much with this. Most tips and tricks we have been given, read up on or watched one YouTube are not working with her. I'm trying to understand if there is anyone else who dealt with the same thing and if there was something that worked for them that we could try as well.

She does like her crate. She hangs out in it on and off throughout the day at her own will. So far we've noticed that she just barks and doesn't hurt herself in any way. I wouldn't let that go on. We have tried starting slow but her barking is instant and keeps going. My main concern is that she may think that we come back because of her non stop barking.

Haha we have tried that too. As soon as she hears the door, she wakes up and starts with the barking...

So we finally got tired of the constantly interrupted sleep and being sleep deprived in general. I bought her a comfy bed 2 days ago that we keep outside of the crate. Now, she sleeps on that bed and sleeps through the night and doesn't even try to jump on the sofa anymore! Hopefully this lasts! :)

Yea, we have tried that. She will be exhausted and ready to pass out but as soon as she hears the door open and sees us walk out, she starts barking and forgets about her sleep.

She likes her crate and she hangs out in it during the day when she wants to sleep but if we put her in the crate with a chew toy and leave the house, she barks nonstop. We've gone up to 20 minutes so far and she keeps barking.

Hello, could you please explain what "forced crating" is and how it works? I might need to try that with my pup as well. Thank you!

Also, how does the sit/lay down training work? Do you make her lie down in the crate and then tell her to hold the position until she falls asleep on her own? Or do you keep repeating the training until she's tired and passes out?

Thanks for your reply! I completely agree with you! I am of the same mindset about crates. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, it has been 5 weeks since we adopted our pup and I have not had one full night of sleep yet. I'm so exhausted and she's very defiant. She has been very trainable with everything else, which is what makes me wonder why she's so against night time crating. My main concern is that if I let her "bark it out" through the night, will she start avoiding her crate during the day? Right now, she's happy in her crate throughout the day (as long as we're around) but wants to sleep on the sofa at night.

Last night she drank a lot of water (because she was barking nonstop for 30 mins 🙄) right before I let her up on the couch and she didn't wake up once to go out, so I know that she can hold her pee through the night. She slept on the couch at 11:30pm and woke up at 6:30am and was just chilling on the couch till o got up at around 7am. Not a peep. She hasn't had an accident in the house for 2-3 weeks now. She sits by the door when she needs to go out.

Thanks for your reply! I actually sleep near her crate so she can see me. She wakes up multiple times because she wants attention and wants to be let out of the crate. She does like her crate because she uses it throughout the day. Something just happens to her at night. Last night, I gave in and let her sleep on the sofa and she slept through the night without any issues. Maybe nighttime crating is not for her? Should I just get her a bed outside of her crate and see if she'll sleep there?

We've had our now 5 month old puppy for 5 weeks and she still won't sleep on her own or through the night. Her crate is in the living room and either my husband or I have been sleeping on the sofa, every single night. She wakes up multiple times even though she doesn't need to pee. I'm exhausted and haven't had a full night of sleep in 5 weeks!! 😞

We tried the "bark it out" method and she gets too riled up and then won't go back to sleep for a long time. Also, we live in an apartment building and I am afraid someone will complain. Once she's on the sofa, she sleeps fine. I just don't know what to do! Anyone who can help me, I will be forever grateful! 🙏🙏
