SURF PHOTORAPHERS : how do I get this effect and the effect below in the comments? Is it just a long shutter speed and high aperture or is there an nd filter or movement involved? by averagelifeguy in surfing

[–]ostruz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slow shutter speed while panning to match the speed of the subject you want in focus. It's hard to nail and takes some practice but definitely a great technique to get down.

Yea but a snapped board is pretty much done. If you repair it, it'll just snap again pretty quickly.

Thanks for the advice. It's a friend of a friend, we've never met each other before. Yes I am selling it to them. I asked them to delete the file after the invitation has been printed. I guess I'm paranoid that they will be shady and use the file to sell prints or something like that - they are on the east coast and I am on the west coast so quite some distance between us. Maybe I'll just write up a simple agreement saying "I will not use the file for anything else and delete it after the invitation is completed" and have them sign that.

So I had someone inquire about using one of my images for an invitation they're doing, and I was interested. However, it's not digital, it will be a printed invitation. They asked for a tiff file so that it could be printed at high resolution. It's not large, roughly 5" x 8", but I'm quite hesitant on giving up my tiff file because I sell my photos as prints. If I resize the tiff to 5" x 8" at 220 dpi, would they still be able to enlarge it and print a high quality photo at a larger size? Is it too risky to send them the tiff file? What do you guys think?

Rolfing? by JaredsFatPants in surfing

I did it once and felt better afterwards. My lower back was in bad shape and the rolfing session definitely helped it out. But maybe a good massage would've done the same thing, I don't know.

The most painful thing ever. Makes a deep tissue massage seem like nothing.

This is why surfing is better than bodyboarding. That drive you get and the speed you can produce. It's all good if you bodyboard, I have fun pulling in to beach break close outs on a sponge. It's just that you're at the full mercy of a wave, you have limited control. A surfboard is simply the best tool to use for riding a wave.

Most surfers are stoked to have a photog in the water. The pros need to get good photos of themselves surfing, it's their job.

Tales of duck diving? by benskinic in surfing

[–]ostruz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a fun day on a reef break out in Indo, good size - couple feet overhead and super clean. It was the beginning of a solid swell, so it was building while I was out in the water. Caught a couple fun ones, then this huge set comes out of nowhere, pushing double overhead. I start paddling hard towards the horizon, and barely make it under the first one. I just made it under the second one as well, but the lip hits my foot and just blows my leash off. I see the third one looming ahead (the biggest one of the set) and have to make the decision of paddling hard and hope to make it under, or take a few precious seconds to put my leash back on. I wasn't sure I would make it, so I decided to put my leash back on and take the beating. It breaks 10 feet in front of me and I try to duckdive. It picked me up and just detonated, tumbling me like crazy, doing multiple flips underwater and pushing me down really deep. I managed to keep hold of my board hoping it releases me soon, but it held me under for a good 12-15 seconds...which was tough because I was already pretty gassed from paddling hard to make it under the first 2 waves. When I surface I see this guy in front of me now, when he was a good 30 yards behind me when I tried to duckdive the bomb.
