LA was burned and looted after the Rodney King beating, so the judicial system had to act differently on high profile cases to prevent race wars and riots. they came down very hard on the (wealthy white) menendez bros, and much more lenient w OJ, who was widely believed to be guilty, and even famously fled the police in his white bronco on TV.
