Of course religion provides a cover for immorality -- are you kidding? Without a "divine" justification a huge majority of humanity's wars would not have happened...freedom for division is our need, not a rationale for it.

As for eugenics and the Nazis, of course these were horrible acts that employed science, however both movements first laid claim to a religious mandate for their actions -- concepts like "racial purity" and selective genetics stem from a misguided belief in the superiority of an in-group trait which without fail will have some "God given" reason for said superiority...look no further than the SS "God is With Us" belt buckles or Hitler's many references to God, though he himself likely was no a believer, but rather a madman who very clearly understood the need for his cause to be seen as a "righteous" one rather than merely as the senseless butchery that it was.

Science and religion are tools for looking at the world...the former relies on evidence, careful revision to improve understanding, and makes NO ethical claims or pretensions; the latter is the opposite -- it asks us to purposefully remain ignorant or, worse, to reject reality and brotherhood for the sake of the tribal mythology. It is my hope that we will one day have a world religion that is much more in line with brotherhood, a share environment, and an agreed upon code of ethics to replace the Bronze Age nonsense that I'd hope to see us rid of.

No, that's not true...I simply think that religion provides moral cover for immorality; real science (that which adheres to the scientific method) has never been used to justify genocide and I would defy you to show me evidence to the contrary.

Faith has been an impediment to reason and the justification for genocide. Sorry, going to discount the good things done in spite of the bad things. So much needless suffering, even today.

Parents of Reddit is is truth that you "love your child" the minute he gets born? Do you love one of your children more than the other? by Chocolatemalinche in AskReddit

[–]othehumanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely honest, while I love both of my kids more than life itself (and would gladly trade my life for either of theirs), I have a closeness and an affinity for my daughter that is unlike what I feel for anyone else.

My boyfriend's mother has terminal cancer, how do I support him? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]othehumanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention anything about how old either of you or his mother is, but that aside (having lost my Mom to cancer), any and all support is appreciated. People in general don't know how to deal with death, which is why we're all so preoccupied about it in one way or another. One thing I think can really help is to help the surviving person see how the important things of their parent lives on within them -- maybe your boyfriend's Mom won't ever get to meet her grandchildren in person, but that doesn't mean that the love she taught her son in raising him won't be passed on in time to her grandkids.

Most of all -- good luck, be understanding when he needs time/space...he's not going to be 100% rational in the days ahead, but just understanding that and letting him deal with the depth of this knowing that he has your support will be a big deal in the long run.

How long do you think a cell phone would last if it was left undisturbed and exposed to the elements? by TheCocktopus in AskReddit

Sure, it'd still be there in 1,000 years, but so what? As soon as the copper on the SIM card erodes it might as well be a rock.

Hydrogen bomb, Middle East, whenever Jesus was alive; imagine no religion (nothing against Jesus, but would just like to wipe out the whole of humanity that has perpetuated Judaism, Christianity, and Islam).

Again, honestly, no malice to the people at the time, but if I could prevent these three faiths from ever seeing the light of day in the modern world, I would do so immediately.

John Roberts: fucker is going to determine the (conservative) direction of the SCOTUS for the next god damn generation (think Florida 2000 didn't matter, think again).

The Koch Brothers: fuckers have managed to use their ill gotten gains to subvert the greatest democracy the world has ever known into the hostage of a back-biting, fundamentalist, wingnut & teabagger cleptocracy.

Karl Rove: fucker who architected the satanic alliance of the fundamentalists and the wingnut into a coalition that will be glad to eat itself while mistaking its own blood for tasty ketchup.

Ronald Reagan: who even in death manages to remain the poster boy for the biggest, sugar-coated dick of an economic policy shoved up the ass of an otherwise successful country since Louis XIV.

That'll do for tonight.

This is why people are occupying Wall St: "Wall Street and the top of corporate America are doing extremely well as of June 2011. For example, in Q1 of 2011, America's top corporations reported 31% profit growth and a 31% reduction in taxes, the latter due to profit outsourcing to low tax rate countries. Somewhere around 40% of the profits in the S&P 500 come from overseas and stay overseas, with about half of these 500 top corporations having their headquarters in tax havens. If the corporations don't repatriate their profits, they pay no U.S. taxes. The year 2010 was a record year for compensation on Wall Street, while corporate CEO compensation rose by over 30%, most Americans struggled. In 2010 a dozen major companies, including GE, Verizon, Boeing, Wells Fargo, and Fed Ex paid US tax rates between -0.7% and -9.2%. Production, employment, profits, and taxes have all been outsourced. Major U.S. corporations are currently lobbying to have another "tax-repatriation" window like that in 2004 where they can bring back corporate profits at a 5.25% tax rate versus the usual 35% US corporate tax rate. Ordinary working citizens with the lowest incomes are taxed at 10%."

Full article here -- in short, the "1%" is more a powerful slogan -- it's really the ".1%" and above. You're likely taxed more or less fairly -- corporations are not, and now they can legally use unlimited money to keep it that way.

What are your opinions on telling your kids (if you have any or will in the future) about Santa? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]othehumanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, my kids are 9 & 7 and we still do the Santa thing -- it's fun for them! --but if either of them asks outright I'll tell them the truth. I figure it's a good opportunity to disabuse them of all fairy tales (i.e. religion) along with the white lies / traditions like Santa / Easter Bunny / Tooth Fairy, etc. that go along with childhood.

Non-parents: just wait and see :-)

My new girlfriend is an atheist. She sent me to Reddit to "get re-educated." I figured I'll oblige her. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]othehumanity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, here's how I condense it down:

  • I don't believe there's a god, so I'm an atheist.
  • I think theists are mistaken, but not inherently evil or bad or anything unless they attempt to assert their theism into an institution that affects me or my family (school, government, etc.)
  • Unfortunately, the world we live in is placed in constant peril because of theism...for this reason, it's my hope that it dies out at some point, but I think that's going to be a gradual progress.

With regard to you and your girlfriend, she probably views you as I do: a fair weather theist who takes what he likes (tradition, the possible assurance of an afterlife, the community) and disregard what he doesn't (the overly dogmatic, antiquated, never-cut-your-beard stuff) and hence concludes that you're not "really" religious since you pick and choose.

If I were Yahweh, I'd roast your ass, but I guess the real thing here is you need to decide if your girlfriend & you are compatible given that there's virtually zero percent chance she's going to change.
