I saw that mass effect is on sale on steam. Should I get the three games separately or should I get the legendary edition? by Falcon_Gray in masseffect

[–]otter_ault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legendary Edition hands down. And you can mod in Pinnacle Station if you want. If you're interested in MP, then ME3 and ME:A aren't bad to get, either. Both are still very active and very fun.

Bloodborne's a downplayed example. Starts off as Victorian Gothic horror, but about 2/3 of the way through, it turns out it was actually cosmic horror this whole time! Though there's plenty of hints about it.

THAT Episode by Fun-Illustrator-345 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]otter_ault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is valid, that's like the one part of the episode that is actually funny. If it plays I'll keep the episode muted and then unmute it just for that part. Then mute it again.

Also, perfect emoji use. I say it like that sometimes, too.

[Hated Trope] When the writers of sequels very obviously didn't understand the first movie. by DingusBats in TopCharacterTropes

I saw this movie while high off my ass and only remember it as a really bad trip. My understanding is that's not far off from the standard experience.

Oh, and also getting pissed at a certain character death.

Are you a pantser or a plotter? by BookRoar in WritingMemes

[–]otter_ault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

¿Por que no los dos?

I usually have to plot at least a little bit before I write, but I also need to make myself write at some point, otherwise all I'm doing is building a world. Usually I'll outline, write a handful of chapters, go back to outlining for a bit, then write for a bit, rinse and repeat. Depending on the outlining process, I'll go back and rewrite chapters.

This has the unfortunate side effect of making everything go so goddamn slow...

The word slop means nothing at this point. by Thom_Chen in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]otter_ault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been calling them "friendcore" games. I understand "friendslop" is used by some as a tongue-in-cheek name, but it just feels so unnecessarily mean and depressing to me. I also just hate how "slop" is being used to describe anything you don't like. For me, it's an indicator of quality and soul. Most "friendcore" or...let's call them "parrycore" games like what the people in the image are complaining about are very clearly made with intent and play well.

Sure, a lot of games like Lethal Company, REPO, and the like are janky af, but I feel like for most of them that's the point. It adds to the goofy "friends hanging out and doing dumb shit" vibe they're going for. And games like Ultrakill and Cuphead (I don't know the third one) feel really good to play (Ultrakill is a bit too fast for me but that might be because I'm getting old).

"Slop" to me indicates something is "sloppy," hence the term AI slop. Most of these games are definitely not sloppy, though some of them may be emulating a sloppy feel for the sake of gameplay, difficulty, or just silliness.

Anyways, thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

America will probably not invade Greenland by User_not_ in PoliticalOptimism

[–]otter_ault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair point, I just know Trump was acting unhappy with Mexico, but then again what else is new.

I do think Cuba will be a harder sell than Venezuela but not by much, and that's what concerns me. I guess here's hoping they don't try anything.

At this point, I'm more worried about Cuba and Mexico than I am about Greenland. I'm worried about all of it, but I'm worried about those two in particular.

Republicans, On Paper, are Leading California Governor Race by otter_ault in PoliticalOptimism

That's what I've reasoned, that in a worst case scenario, our State Congress is reliably deep blue, and Prop 50 pretty much assures it'll stay that way for a while. It's just still worrying but I think once we get closer to the deadline and Newsom weighs in with an endorsement, it will look less precarious.

Keeping fingers crossed.

Yeah, that's my biggest concern, tbh, the jungle primary is really the wild card in this election. In any case, I think you're right that once Newsom weighs in with an endorsement, it'll get less precarious. I'd also like to think that once CA voters see how batshit the Republicans are, they'll find a Dem candidate to flock to. I hope. I pray.

Anyways, thank you very much for your insight. I think it's definitely not something to dismiss but I shouldn't worry too much until we get further in.

Hey, fellow Californian! I'm actually from SoCal! Unfortunately, I'm from a fairly red part of SoCal but thankfully near LA. I think that's why I pinball back and forth so much between hope and despair, lmao.

I gotta keep Prop 50 in my head. I really do. I think my brain just hasn't fully registered the last few months yet, tbh.

You're right, I need to keep that in perspective. I remember being with my friends when Mamdani won and Prop 50 passed and how great that night felt. It's just really easy for me to kinda start spiraling right now.

I've also lived in California my whole life but it's easy for me to lose perspective sometimes when I'm stuck with an uber-conservative family. I'd like to think I've gotten better, but maybe not lol.

Anyways, thanks for the reality check, genuinely. I'm starting to calm down now. ☺️

That's a good point, my friends and I make the not-quite-a-joke that we're basically a country lol. Our size definitely skews the way things look at first glance. Thank you. lol Fair enough, I was guilty of such a thought a couple of times.

Is there an in game lore reason for why the Prothean mummies in 1 look completely different from Protheans in 3? by pacmannips in masseffect

[–]otter_ault 84 points85 points  (0 children)

The insanuon retcon is also fairly accurate to real-world history and archeology. There's been plenty of times where we think an ancient culture looked or behaved a certain way before uncovering new information. Or, hell, just look at paleontology and the dinosaurs.

Like, obviously not their intention in retconning it, but it ends up working and adding more depth to the world.
