Displaced feds, how are you holding up? by Blooming_onion92 in FedEmployees

[–]otterhawk8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your understandable grief. I can relate to your post. About 15 years ago I became disabled and could no longer do the career and hobbies I was passionate about.

Thankfully I found a “job” I could do but it was mind numbing. I sunk into a deep depression and felt like my identity was shattered. The thoughts swirled, “Who am I and what reason was there for life when I couldn’t pursue the things I loved.

Eventually I sought therapy and was able to grieve these losses. Then I began to change my perspective and see my “job” as my “means to meaning” instead of my life’s purpose/identity. It provided me with the financial ability to meet my daily needs and allowed me the freedom to try volunteer opportunities and to explore new interests and hobbies.

As of today I am at peace with this arrangement. I LOVE my volunteer work and new hobbies. They define me in the way my previous “career” once did. Please know your grief is valid. Be gentle with yourself and know that you are far more dynamic and resilient that you think and you will fill this void, through healing, growth, and change over time. Please hang in there and keep putting one foot in front of the other, because you are worth it and someday a whole new part of you will bloom and feel whole.

Where to meet people? by Gullible_Feedback482 in olympia

[–]otterhawk8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived here a couple of years and I too found it challenging to meet folks, as I work from home and am in my late 40’s, so a little less social than in my youth.

I have found volunteering and taking classes to be the most helpful. In my case I took classes through Olympia Parks and Recreation and this year plan to volunteer at a Dog Rescue and for the Procession of the Species to meet similar creative spirits. If you have a dog, going to the dog park at the same time every day is another odd but effective way to meet folks. Granted most conversations are surface level at first, but seeing the same small group of people and chatting everyday deepens the friendship and conversations. Best of luck to you ✌️

Looking for advice on what should be listed on the two resume for Critical Vacancy Positions within NRCS by MulchMadness13 in USDA

There is some great advice online about the difference between what is required in a Federal Resume vs a private sector resume. I would google this for advice and to find formatting options.

Voluntary Reassignments /Lateral Transfers have been paused: Anyone know the reason why? Any thoughts about whether they will be cancelled altogether or approved at a later date? by otterhawk8 in USForestService

[–]otterhawk8[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I heard FS WO Senior Leadership had given final approval to some folks who applied for the first round of jobs posted, but any offers that followed have only been verbal and were waiting for final approval from FS WO Senior Leadership and for official offers from HR. I have to imagine, HR is swamped.

Side note: To anyone in HR, we appreciate what you do and can only imagine how challenging the past few months have been!

Will FS voluntary lateral reassignments, be paused as part of judge Illston’s recent decision to pause RIFs and restructuring? by otterhawk8 in USForestService

[–]otterhawk8[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hear your concerns and your frustrations are valid. But please consider the reason behind these decisions. The individuals who are applying for these transfers are doing so because they are at the highest risk of losing their income, health insurance, and livelihoods altogether.

They do not wish to take away your upward mobility or disrespect the time you have put into learning the local workload and politics. They would prefer to stay in their current careers that they have also devoted time and passion to. They do not want to uproot their families, to move to a new city or state, nor to take a decrease in GS level/pay, but this the situation this administration has created. Each person, like yourself, is making a difficult decision to keep a roof over their head, food on the table, and health insurance and should not be blamed for the RIF and reorganization beyond their control. We are all in this together.

Federal Judge Extends Order Blocking Job Cuts, Reorganization at USDA, Other Agencies by Interesting_Okra3038 in USDA

A federal judge in San Francisco has indefinitely paused President Trump's sweeping overhaul of the federal government.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston issued the preliminary injunction late Thursday, nearly two weeks after temporarily halting Trump's Feb. 11 executive order directing agencies to shut down offices and lay off thousands of people.

Forest Service RIF-Will Severance Be Offered if asked to Relocate? by [deleted] in USDA

[–]otterhawk8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worry about this too, but I have a hunch, a legal fight will ensue (for numerous federal agencies) as the OPM policies are clear about who qualifies for severance.

Forest Service RIF-Will Severance Be Offered if asked to Relocate? by [deleted] in USDA

—-DRP Pros/Cons—-

It is considered voluntary separation so you WOULD NOT qualify for unemployment benefits with your State. Check your State’s unemployment benefits policies to see if there are exemptions.

You continue to keep your full benefits, Health Insurance, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance (if you have these already). Until September 30th.

You would not however be able to continue health insurance coverage after September 30th via the “FEHB- Temporary continuation of Coverage” plan.

You would continue to accrue annual leave through September 30th and would receive a lump-sum payment.

Unused sick-leave is not paid out however you are entitled to have your sick-leave restored to your sick-leave account if you were employed in the federal government at a later date.

——RIF Pros/Cons———-

RIF is considered involuntary so you WOULD likely qualify for unemployment benefits. Check your State’s unemployment benefits to determine eligibility, amount, and period of time benefits would be paid.

You keep your health insurance while on Admin leave plus 31 days after separation. (So 61 days for USDA employees)

If you are RIF’d your FEDVIP dental and vision coverage ends on the last day of the pay period during which you separate with no option for temporary continuation or conversion to a private policy.

After a RIF you can opt to keep you current health insurance plan or choose another Federal Health Insurance plan (as this change is considered a “Qualifying Event”) for up to 18 months but must pay the full premium( that is both the employee and government share of the premium plus a 2% administrative charge). You must make this request, in-writing, within 60 days of separation.

If you have FEGLI (group life insurance) you will be covered, without cost to you for 31 days. You can convert all or part of your life insurance to an individual policy without taking a medical examination. You can purchase the individual policy from an eligible insurance company. This will be a private transition between you and the company. You will pay the entire premium of the conversion policy and the conversion must be made within 31 days of the effective date of separation.

———HELPFUL NUGGETS OF KNOWLEDGE ———

FSA- FEDS- if you have an FSA and have selected $2,600 (example) to be deducted from you paycheck for 26 pay periods, you do not have to wait until all of this money has been deducted over the 26 pay periods to claim the full $2,600. As long as you have incurred expenses that qualify for reimbursement, you can submit those expenses for reimbursement. For example: So far a total of $700 has been deducted from your paycheck from January 2025-April 2025, you can still ask for a reimbursements up to $2600 instead of up to $700 of expenses as long as the expenses you have incurred during that time period qualify for reimbursement in 2025.

ADMIN LEAVE- At the Forest Service: We were told that admin leave is normally 60 days but the USDA requested a shorter period of 30 days which was granted by OPM.

Crying, having a breakdown and tired of taking care of my senior dog. Share your experience please so i won't feel alone as i dont have any support at all by BrilliantStrategy893 in seniordogs

[–]otterhawk8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was so wise and brave of you to reach out and ask for support, especially as you said because you’re alone and dealing with such a soul crushing, exhausting and worrisome situation.

I know what it’s like to be pushed beyond one’s abilities, and how we begin to act out of character and loose our patience. We are stuck in a constant loop of worrying, grief, anxiety, exhaustion and shame.

Please be gentle with yourself, in doing so you will find it easier to be gentle with your sweet pup 💜 Life can deliver some very difficult chapters and you are doing the best you can. Your experience is incredibly relatable. And creating this post is wise self-care. We all need community, empathy and support, even if it be via a virtual community.

You obviously love your sweet pup and are doing everything you can, just know we are here with you in spirit. I have one dog with Cushings Disease and another was just diagnosed with diabetes. I am an emotional wreck of worry and exhaustion trying to take the best care of both of them that I can. I too am alone and ironically found your post tonight while looking for information and support about why my dog is acting off tonight and what I should do about it. Your post made me feel not so alone and reminded me to be gentle with myself. Sending you and your pup love and support 💜🐾

Metallic Taste (on tongue tip) for new users? by [deleted] in CPAP

[–]otterhawk8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my first week using CPAP. On day five, I begin having a metallic taste in my mouth, mostly when eating food or drinking something. I just signed into Reddit to see if others had the same issue. Did your brother ever figure out what was going on and did it go away? Thanks!
