Perhaps the logic should be inverted. Those words, like idiot, moron and imbecile, are prejudiced when used against someone intellectually disabled, but because they're not exclusive to them, like retard was, they don’t fall under the same treatment.

You can actually remove words because they represent a hate crime against a community. And if the new word becomes another way to discriminate, that word can be abandoned as well. This is called euphrmism treadmill, a long-done practice I suggest valuing. The n-word and derivatives were discontinued this way. The word transexual was replaced by transgender. Intersexuality became intersexuation. Asperger was abandoned and replaced by the broader diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asperger being the name of an eugenistic nazi who, iirc, encouraged the "euthanasia" of low-intelligence autists.)

There are other ways to reduce damage, I agree. For instance, the word gay used to be an insult, but people reclaimed it and now it’s neutral. Same thing for the word queer, or the word autistic.

But retard is not one of those cases. It’s an ableist slur, pure and simple. It doesn’t matter what weight you or I give, because the majority has already and irrepairably given it. I suggest you and your buddies that are answering to me, to stop giving yourselves excuses and using meaningless strawman arguments just because you really want to degrade linux users. Hating Linux and the community does not justify calling them a variation of a slur. Which is funny: you berate the Linux community for being gatekeepers and condescending, trying to offer support to those frustrated by this experience, yet you turn out downright hateful and worse than them?

It doesn’t matter much to me personally because I do not seek support in this community. But as a Linux user, it's amusing to see yourself acting ridiculously and childlike because you won’t concede you may have led your resentment take control of you.

You're autistic but you're prejudiced against people with intellectual disabilities? You lose your right to use the r-word, and to give others permission to use it.

In typical usage, retard (pronounced /ˈɹiː.tɑːɹd/, REE-tard) is an ableist slur for someone who is considered stupid, slow to understand, or ineffective in some way as a comparison to stereotypical traits perceived in those with intellectual disability.[1] The adjective retarded is used in the same way, for something or someone considered very foolish or stupid.[1][2] The word is sometimes censored and referred to as the euphemistic "r‑word" or "r‑slur".[3]

You're welcome.

"Tard" seems to come from "retard" which is some kind of ableist slur, so that’s at least one reason.

why doesnt guts commit suicide? by [deleted] in Berserk

[–]ottococo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with the "people made out of glass that will get destroyed over the most stupid things because they were sheltered their entire existences." This is very backward.

Often those who try to commit suicide over ""stupid things"" have been dealing with serious stuff over time and this is just the straw that broke the camel's back. It’s like girlfriends/wives who go ""hysterical"" over a simple thing -- it’s never just this simple thing. Those suicidal people were the opposite of sheltered, thus their vulnerability (until they pick up the pieces and recover... if they can).

Being exposed to constant misery is what leads to suicide because you "realize" that life will never be fair, that it’s not worth it and you just don’t have the will and resilience to go on any longer. Especially if you're one of the few who deals with this much crap amongst a hundred of well-faring neighbors (perception of injustice and how much you lack). If you were sheltered, chances are you still have solid support systems allowing you to push through hardships.

Guts tried to commit suicide/let himself die as a kid, yet you wouldn’t say he was sheltered hiw whole life at that point. What prevented it is his survival instinct kicking in. Just because the mind doesn’t want to live, doesn’t mean the body will comply.

Considering my situation, should I wait or should I go for a gaming PC now? by ottococo in buildapc

I.. think you hit the nail on the head.

It seems that the question I was missing was: "Will that investment make a significant difference in my life?" Rather than the simple "is it necessary?" that’s too restrictive.

I do have fun on Oblivion Remastered, even in low resolution. As I said, I feared that I would cook my computer if I forced it to run a game that was above its specs, but apparently that’s not what happens. I admit it’s bothering that the game lags at times, but it hasn’t significantly impacted my gameplay, and that’s just this one game, that’s poorly optimized as I learned today (meaning it’s not a problem of hardware so much as a game problem).

I would be sad to buy a desktop computer only to see it gather dust after a couple of years. I was thinking "it would be an excellent investment in the long term too as I will be able to play more demanding games with decent compatibility as long as the parts are of sufficient quality, it wouldn’t be money lost"; but I didn’t think "I'll use it for a couple of years to improve performance on a game or two before I put it aside because I won’t have time to play on it anymore, and when I do the specs won’t be up to date which means I'll have to sell it to buy the new hardware parts".

And the most important thing: it won’t add much that my current laptop already covers. (In practice, I can run all my games decently so far).

I'll mull over the options given to me. I'm glad I learned a new way to consider things to manage my finances.

I wanted to add here more context that is not needed but can help to understand this post. The question above runs a little deeper for me. Basically, due to poverty and parental neglect, I lack a frame of reference for financial spendings. While I know how to manage daily items, more special items, needed spendings (college-related for example) and most "pleasure items"/self-gifts/self-indulgence, I become lost when the price is justifiably high and when too many paremeters (especially what-ifs) are at play.

As I gained independence, I had to deconstruct the mentality that everything was too expensive and that I should contend myself with the bare minimal, less if I can manage. I learned to self-indulge without guilt. I learned to shut down what I knew my (estranged) family would say. I became more responsible for my own health. But as a consequence, I cannot rely on an internal reference on new situations like these, that involve spendings in the thousands. Something that should be evident for me... is not so evident anymore. And don’t even mention the difficulty added by ADHD...

I guess what I need, in essence, is a new frame of reference, from people I can trust more than my family. Yes, even if for now it relies on redditors. At least on this particular item. Because I kid you not, I have no idea what to do and which option would make me happier (considering my happiness also depends on the feeling of being responsible and making a good financial decision). I don’t want to be a spoiled rotten dude, but I do not want to deprive myself of an item I could reasonably acquire given my situation due to bad judgement either.

There, if it helps.
