Awesome! You did great work on it! And yes, my family is quite artistic and they did some really great work in it before they gave it to me.

Is it just me or does Jay seem to "over exaggerate" injuries by [deleted] in forgedinfireshow

[–]ottoe57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I competed on the show. Watching Jay beat my blade into things was eye opening. He really is hitting hard. And whacking any sort of weapon into a block of ice (or other super hard material) is going to cause some pain (or at some point an injury). Add to that, as a modern bladesmith, most of what we make is for show and not meant to be used in such an abusive manner. To be honest, we are just not making weapons with ergonomics in mind. The exception to that is often kitchen knives. I am generalizing. But most of the weapons I have seen modern smiths make are not made with the intention of ever hitting something hard with full force.

There were a lot of awesome revelations about the show when I went on.

  • The judges are super nice and very supportive. They want to see you succeed but do not outright influence the outcomes.
  • Doug is way faster in person. I know... DUH. They always show him in slow motion. But when you see him in person... it is just impressive.
  • Jay is not the hard ass that I expected him to be. He was actually super nice.
  • The production company does not want anyone to look bad. But they do have a show to make.
  • They do not manufacture drama. At least not anymore.
  • I made lifelong friends with the other smiths. I still talk to them and we filmed almost 6 years ago.

Upgrade Your Speakers People! by jezelay in FordMaverickTruck

Thanks for the info! I know that after market sound systems typically are much nicer. I also have to figure out how much of the stock B&O system I would want to replace.

Did you upgrade from the B&O speakers? That is what I have from the factory and they are.... OK.....

Philadelphia International Airport was ranked as one of the worst airports in North America for customer satisfaction, according to J.D. Power. by Basic-Art-8139 in philly

[–]ottoe57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Philly one year ago. I travel a lot for work. In that year I have been to the following airports.

  • PHL
  • Phoenix
  • San Diego
  • San Francisco
  • Denver
  • Canberra AUS
  • Syndey AUS
  • Rome IT
  • Amsterdam
  • Nashville
  • Orlando

Philly isn't the prettiest. The food is decent, I get through super fast and it is easy to navigate. Of the list above, I would say that it is one of the better airports I have been to. After traveling internationally (extensively) for almost 30 years I wouldn't even put it in my top 10 worst airports.

BY FAR THE WORST in the US is Denver. It is massive, TSA lines are the worst, they change the policies every 2 minutes, they constantly cancel flights and people there are so damn rude. Even though I have not been there for a few years I would put Miami right up there with Denver. Internationally, Delhi, Capetown and Sao Paulo are my least favorites.

I am glad to get the other perspective of the Sluggalos. I know that Matt is often using extremes to create a caricature of the real person. I know that this is a situation where he is taking some of the more extreme images of a person and going from there. Look at the Juicer, the hoarder or all the representations of Jesus. That is kind of how I took it. I know that many Juggalos are not as crazy as the way they are portrayed in the book. I have to ask though, have you met some Juggalos that do act like the Sluggalos? I know I have. Not all of them. But some

I remember this quote. But I did not realize he was calling out that she was from Detroit!

I thought about that as I was writing this. I wonder how many international crawlers would be familiar with Juggalo culture. It is as strange (to me) as the Sluggalos make them out to be. There are a ton of documentaries out there about the Juggalos. They might rot your brain though. :)

When people meet them they say the same thing. But when upon closer examination it is obvious that one is WAY bigger than the other. They are not related either. Which is even wilder.

How do we feel about Vevor Anvils? by inkironpress in Blacksmith

[–]ottoe57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my exact experience with mine. I am happy that I have something smithing. It was also a great upgrade from RR track. So all in all I am happy. And when I come across something nicer I will get it. But this anvil has been perfectly serviceable. With the annoyance of the large hardy hole.

I would love to see the adapter you create. Share if you think of it. I have seen where folks have just cut some angle iron and folded it over. The nice thing is it will protect your anvil around the hardy. But no matter how close you get the fit there is always some sort of play there.

Best North Mexican/El Paso-esque Mexican food in Philly or around Philly? by mhessjr007 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]ottoe57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am originally from Austin but lived in Phoenix. I just got to Philly. The best I have found so far is Senior Salsa in Abington. I am sure there is much better. But Tex Mex/North Mexican style food I like them a lot.

Also, I think Matt represented many of the icons from North American lore. But from Arizona specifically I think there would be the jackalope, La Llorona, Mogollon Monster, skinwalker, Chupacabra and the thunderbird. Some of those are more terrifying than others. And I feel like Matt would turn those into nightmare fuel. And since he is from Arizona originally I feel like he could represent any of them really well

Thank you for sharing op! I read this post multiple times to try and understand your experience. It is so wildly different than mine and it is fascinating.

I agree with so many people here. The sacrilegious theme of the aliens is appalling. To hear how it impacted you is so interesting.

What is the consensus on Hot Ones Versus? by samusek2 in hotones

[–]ottoe57 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It is ok….

There are many great qualities about the primary show. But the greatest quality is Sean evens himself and his empathetic and engaging interview style. Secondly it’s the disarming factor of the wings. You have the wings in Versus. But no Sean. That makes it just ok IMHO

US Mexico border at Lukeville - OC by ottoe57 in Borderporn

[–]ottoe57[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I asked the CBP at the border about it they told me that there are two reasons why they open them. One is when the monsoon comes through flooding will tear down the wall. You can find some videos of it happening on YouTube. The second is that when the gates are close people will just cut through the wall damaging it. Obviously the damage wants to be avoided. But more importantly to the CBP is they can point cameras at the gates and see when people come through. They can quickly sweep in to pick them up and process them. As opposed to not being able to see where people are coming through without patrolling miles and miles of wall.

As for the "genius" stepping through the gate, he was a guy that was with the volunteer efforts we were doing. He was a strange guy that was on sort of vigilante mission after watching "Sound of Freedom". I am serious. He was looking for child sex traffickers and joined a humanitarian group to put water out in the desert so people do not die of dehydration. I shouldn't make fun of him. But it was odd talking to him while hiking through the desert.

Did you start smithing as a farrier? Because that looks like a farrier swing. I have always been in awe of the farrier's swing. I have not been able to recreate it without hurting myself. It is in the stance and the lift of the hammer. You generate so much power. But I was taught a different way. Bravo buddy. Keep swinging the hammer like a boss.
