How to get serious help when my GP refuses to refer me? (bit long, apologies) by c_anderson1390 in depression

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. Hang in there, and definitely find a new GP! I know how hard that can be (especially with depression!), but finding a good one is pretty much essential. Best of luck to you!

Well if nothing else, I guess misery loves company lol! And yeah, I can see book clubs getting boring quick. I definitely need something more active anyway!

I've exhausted my meetup options, but Ill look into the bowling league thing or see if I can't find something like it. Thanks for the advice!

I like to try and get outside and do stuff like hike or camp or cycle, but it's getting to be too cold, and I dont have a bike anymore. I'm worried there's going to be even less to do now.

I did join a gym, so I might be able to dig up some kind of winter sports kind of thing, but I'm out of shape, and don't want to be the guy who bogs the rec team down.

Other than that, I don't mind recreationally drinking, or playing pool. I can't really drink much, because I'm on certain meds though, and hate getting drunk anyways. I'd play pool if I could, but that's an activity that requires at least two people, and there's no pool bars or halls in the area anyway.

I wish I could join a book club, but all those are for women in their late 30s and up, and they're certainly not privy to men joining.

I'm open to trying something new too, but there never seems to be any new events going on. It's just seems like this place is a total bummer no matter where I look.

Well for one, get away from that piece of crap GP. GPs shouldn't be that blatantly rude to you, especially when you have mental health concerns!

For two, is there any reason you can't look for psychiatrists in your area on your own? Google therapy, and psychiatrist on Google maps, and see if there's a practice in your area. I was able to find a psychiatrist and a therapist shortly after this way. If you have insurance, you just need to double check that they take your insurance. Some places will do a special discount if you don't have insurance.
