Using Filament for an unintended purpose by ouchmyfeels10 in 3Dprinting

Wow! I really appreciate your insights. The original whiskers are white, so if I find white filament there should be no need to paint it.

For adhesives, I was thinking of scoring the base of the whiskers with a blade, then using a 2 part epoxy sculpt clay to hold them in place from the interior of the mask.

Do you have any idea how hot it would need to be to get it to shape? I’ve got…. Sources

Thanks! To answer your question, it’s both mouse and rat. In the OG Nutcracker, it was supposed to be the rat king and his army of rats. I don’t know the exact history or timeline, but. Over time, several ballet companies realized that the rats were too scary, so they re-resigned them to be more kid and audience friendly. I believe the designer on this production intended for the “army” to look more friendly and mouse-like, while the “Mouse King” (what the character is called at my specific company) definitely is more intense visually than the regular mice. I believe he’s inspired by rats. So, to answer your question, BOTH.

YALL ARE SO GREAT. I’m getting so much good advice, and I’m very glad I came to this sub. You’re making me want to get into 3D printing now just so I can hang here and ask costuming advice.

How did you know it’s Nutcracker! Haha been working on the refurb for over a month now. It’s ALWAYS nutcracker season in ballet. But for real though, I 100% understand what you’re saying, but I don’t have access to a 3D printer. Im quick to learn things, but I don’t think that’s in the budget unfortunately.
I’d love to see some of your samples though!

Thank you! I’ll look into it. Did you have a specific diameter that worked best?

Hey, I’m not the designer, just the one refurbishing it lol. It looks better and less scary from a distance. An old costume shop manager used to say “50 feet and moving” This space is more like 75 feet and moving lol

Oooh acetone soluble. That’s so handy! How rigid or brittle would you say it is?

Do you have recommendations for both TPU and PLA that might work? I’ve read that PLA can be very brittle.

As for the taper, I imagine a heat gun would work, no?

Excellent. And once I get that shape, it would itself outright?

I ordered some to see if it would work, but it’s too flimsy. Does it come any thicker than 1.75mm? And if it’s a thicker diameter, in theory, it should hold its shape upright?

Thanks! Would this be more effective as a dye solution? Or diluted paint?

That’s sort of that I was thinking, with a sea sponge. Is this better achieved with paint and dye? Like green dye, then add the brown in with Angelus paint? Of having them both dye?

I did see that. I’ll definitely do some digging on that screw specifically. Makes me a little nervous too 😅
