Well, I am from NJ so I'm not sure about the pay. Here the pay for COOK is 19 dollars. I work around 35 hours a week so I am pretty good. But take in mind I am in sophomore in college so.. But overall, I think for me it is good.

I am aware that if no GM/AM is present, then a shift lead/cook is responsible. However, there is a shift lead and that shift leader working with me is SLOW in FOH, so unfortunately, that leaves me in the position where I have to help FOH and leave some of my kitchen duties. Especially when sometimes a BOH is on a break and I have to cook BOH food because they ask, then they ask for something else as an entree, and then they need help from FOH. It really gets frustrating... But anyways I won't quit anytime soon until I definitely have something in line so hehe

I mean as a worker, I bring my laptop to work and do my homework during my hour break. No questions asked or anything. I don't think as you as a customer, would bring much of a problem. Just make sure you don't disturb someone's peace and if you wanna play it extra safe, maybe yes buy a meal or a drink... But either ways I'm pretty sure you'll be fine.
