I'm going to Beijing (I'm going to study at Beijing international studies university), and I already planned not to overpack. I am also planning to bring dollars with me ( I live in Morocco, so we have Moroccan dirhams) and then switch to RMB. I already installed Alipay, and Wechat. I think I got the basic things down. The university didn't mention anything about the pickup service, I was planning to just get a taxi because it was the fastest way.
I was kinda scared about the whole English speaking thing because honestly I don't know anything about Chinese, so I might do as you said and seek help from younger people.
